I recently aquired an R-25 and want to use it to hit targets out to 1000 yards. I don't reload "YET". Is it crazy to think that I could get ammo over the counter that would accomplish this goal from a semi automatic? If not, what ammo would you (anyone) suggest. I'm new to both SH and Long Range Shooting so any advise/help would be greatly appreciated.
Please and Thank You

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

Federal Gold Medal Match with 175 Gr
Hornady's new 178 gr load
Black Hills 175 gr
If you can get your hands on it M118LR

These are all good starts to see what your rifle will do, but most shooters will advise you to get the "most" of you rifle you probably will have to start reloading and tune your loads to your rifle.

Good luck and I hope you have as much fun reloading and shooting yuur own as I do. It quite satisfying to see your loads and rifle perform at the max

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

What about the action deforming the nose of the bullet? This might sound stupid but I was told that the bullet is cycled into the chamber with such force by these rifles that it will flatten a spot on the nose of a hollow point bullet as it rides up into position. Do I need to shoot only FMJ or plastic tipped for this reason, or am I talking out my ass?

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

Be careful shooting the new Hornady 178gr load. The "superformance" ammo I think is what they call it. It is a proprietary powder blend that boosts the muzzle velocities by keeping the pressure curve high as the bullet moves down the barrel.

This translates to high gas port pressures and there have been reports of pressure signs, blown primers, and battering the rifles up in the gas guns. There are no problems in bolt actions.

The other options above are all good, and yes, you can get there with factory ammo.

EDIT: The feed ramps won't hurt the nose of your bullet unless something is wrong with the rifle. My DPMS LR260 feeds match BTHPs and ballistic tipped bullets with the same functionality. I've pulled the chambered round out before firing and the feed ramp in my rifle hasn't hurt the nose at all.

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

Thanks for the help. I'm relieved to find out that the hollow points wont be an issue. This sight has been a huge help. I picked up a scope and lots of help/knowledge.

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

I found the fgmm 168s for 22.79 a box but I can't find the 175s for less than 33 and change a box when you buy a case. Does anyone know of a place to find them cheaper?

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

I am lucky with two small boys and a demanding job to get time to shoot, but I make time every 6 weeks or so. that being said, no time for reloading. I have a 30 cal and a 6.5 (260 rem) that will shoot factory ammo sub MOA if I do my part. HSM has good stuff, and I like the Federal Premium for the 30-06. Both of my guns have PAC-NOR barrels and that may play into it. The HSM and Fed Prem chrono pretty consistent and have low Stnd Deviations.

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

You've got some great answers above.
fwiw, I would avoid the prvi partisan - not as accurate from my limited testing, and not quite hot enough to make 1k consistently stably. Out of a 5R the prvi 175 don't have the snap at 1k of the fgmm. Pity, as its a lot cheaper.

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

Funny, I've found the prvi to be just as hot as the FGMM, but a hair down in consistancy. I felt the M118 - older stuff with 172-gr FMJ was a little underpowered, but almost as consistant as the FGMM. Testing was with my 5R at 7200-ft elevation. I've pretty much given up shooting 168 SMK at anything beyond 500-yards eventhough that's what I used back when I shoot service rifle at 600-yards. But, it's still fun to challenge yourself with it out to a 1000-yards.

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

Black Hills only makes 168's and 175's per their web page.
They use Win Brass, the 168 is a Hornady, the 175 is a SMK.
They 168's would not go to 1000 for me but the 175's are super.

Remington Accu Tip .447BC@2700fps or Premier Match .496BC@2609fps.

I've pushed Federal American Eagle 150gr FMJBT's out to 1100 yards no problem.

I've seen Hornady ammo do ok aslo 168's I think, was a competitor in a match using it.

this is in a 26" bolt gun between 2500 and 3500 ASL

Re: factory ammo for 1k????

1K. lol furthest we've tried em so far is 1170, 2 hits out of 7 shots on a 2wide by 3ft tall steel plate. Other five shots were near misses from misjudging wind.
Pretty regular 1st rnd hits from 6-850or so. Groups great at 100, under half inch. Chrono out of my rifle at 2702 with a deviation of 39 on average. I like em and they shoot good out of my rifle as well as my parters. He shoots a DMPMS lr 308 and its very accurate out of it as well.
