Looking for advice on the best way to remove the factory muzzle brake on a 700P .338LM. Ive read some have used a torch to heat the brake and twist it off, but I worry about the heat soak into the barrel and ruining the hardness. Ive seen others that let the muzzle sit in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Curious of others advice on the best way to remove this brake without compromising the heat treat on the barrel.

Quick fix take the bottom metal out use the old brown masking tape and put one layer on and try it. Keep adding layers until it works. Then measure it. Look for the same thickness of shim stock you can find it in brads or stainless steel. Install and your done

Your just heating it enough to melt what I assume is rock set or lock tight. Not red hot, but warm. Use a butane torch, you shouldn’t be able to get it hot enough to damage anything. Just keep the heat on the brake no reason to heat the barrel. And light amounts of heat. Your not soldering or brazing.
