Guys, I have always kind of ignored this safety aspect of climbing stands. Harnesses were just too much of a pain so I was just extra careful. I have been lucky but an tired of pushing it.

I know there are several systems available that are completely self contained and much easier to use now. What do you guys recommend? It seems that I saw something that was retractable as you ascend, like a seat belt works. Any ideas? Where to get?

Re: Fall Arrest system

I was the same way about them being a pain but I have since bought the Hunter Saftey System and I am pleased. It is easy to use and stays out of the way in the stand. I also try to use mostly ladder stands just because they are easier to get in and out of, not to mention a lot quieter.

I still have a couple of climbing stands that I use in the places where I need the hieght.

Good luck,
Oneshot

Re: Fall Arrest system

I generally hunt from stands that you climb "into" rather than "onto", that being said. I use a 6 - 8' length of 8mm climbing rope (kermantle or similar) with a carabiner on both ends. One goes around the tree the other goes to the front of my riggers belt. It allows me about 270* of turn around before it starts to bind.

I had considered the harness systems, but being hung up by your shoulders in the middle of nowhere is not a good place to be.

Cheers,

Doc

PS: Also real handy for a deer drag

Re: Fall Arrest system

I went ahead and ordered the Basic Hunter Safety system harness.

Talked to the mfg in AL for a while. Great guy and hooked me up on the price. I asked him about any must have upgrades. He said the rope style tree attachment was a great improvement over the standard strap so I got that. He said it really improved mobility in the stand and was just easier to handle.

His price was better than anything I saw online so I ordered both and had them overnighted to me. Will have it on Saturday morning when I drop that monster that is roaming around a small spot I hunt. LOL

Re: Fall Arrest system

Man, I just dont get the "too big of a PITA" ideology. A PITA harness to prevent a fall, beats the hell out of getting coloring books for Christmas for the rest of your life.
