I'm leaning heavily toward Nightforce's NXS 2.5-10x42 or 3.5-15x50.

That said, I want to get a little more information about some of its competitors.

Trijicon's 5-20x50 looks like a solid contendor. The glass seems to be essentially the same as Nightforce's NXS 3.5-15x50, and the scope is definitely light. Trijicon's passive passive illumination system is great.

For roughtly half the price, what is the Trijicon missing? Does it subtend correctly at 20x? Is it made in USA or Japan?

Any other scopes to consider? I'm worried 20x might be too far for SFP. SWFA's SSHD 5-20 seems like a great option but the Trijicon's illumination would be great for hunting. Also they're not available locally.

The scope and gun's primary purposes are hunting and long range target shooting. I think SFP will work alright for me while hunting because when I'm taking really long range shots I'll be able to zoom all the way in after acquiring the target at a lower magnification.

The biggest drawback to the Trijicon is that is only has 40 MOA adjustment range (+/- 20 MOA) vs 100 MOA on the Nightforce. You could mitigate this a slightly with a canted base, but you will still be limited on the range you can go before bottoming out your elevation. The only ranging reticle Trijicon offers is a mil-dot, but it uses MOA adjustment knobs. I know their ACOGs are very clear, but I have not looked through any of their adjustable scopes. Trijicon doesn't have a zero stop or high speed turrets either (neither of those are required, but certainly can make things easier).

I would not worry about the illumination a whole lot, even for hunting. I would much prefer having nice clear glass than an illuminated reticle at dawn/dusk. Having owned both the SS 5-20 and the NXS, I would certainly choose either of them based on adjustment range alone, not to mention both have very clear glass. You should be able to find a used SS 5-20 <$1000 without illumination and used NXS for $1300-$1600 depending on zero stop and high speed turrets.
