Hey Guys,

I'm new to .308.... I have never owned one, but now since I've had to stop reloading I can't afford to buy box ammo for my wild-cats....

I plan on shooting these out of my 20" AR10....

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two boxes of ammo, other than the price? http://palmettostatearmory.com/1596.php

They are both FGMM
They are both 175gr SMK's

Other than that, if the velocities are relatively the same, shouldn't they fly at or about the same path?

Thanks for any help,

Hugo

Yea, I have heard nothing but good things about Southwest Ammo. Plan on placing an order soon.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

To actually answer the question, look closely at the description.
Crimped primers, probably also sealed, probaly has sealant on the bullet, bullet probably has a heavier crimp and it is listed as a 7.62x51 load. Theoretically, it should be loaded to lower pressures than the .308 load.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

I can get the 7.62 stuff for like 17 a box right now.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

I might be wrong but isn't .308Win .002 thousands smaller in diameter than 7.62. 7.62 will measure .310.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

I got some of the 7.62x51 FGMM because I figured it was as close as I would be able to get to commercially-manufactured M118LR.

The case mouth is definitely crimped on the bullet - slightly. I pulled one to verify. Inside the crimp groove, the bullet measured .306. The outside of the neck at the mouth measured .002" smaller than 168FGMM .308Winchester - this was the crimp.

The primers may have a slight crimp but I can't really see it.

The primers do have sealant.

Federal's parent company has the current contract to run Lake City Army Ammunition Plant...this is probably M118 that failed some minor part of lot testing and is being sold on the civi market...or it could be contract overrun.

Not to beat a dead horse by bringing this topic back up , but does anyone have any more field tested experience with the difference?

I have ran through 3 boxes of this stuff and at 100 yards the grouping is .3-.8MOA, with an average at probably .7, which is pretty damn good for a factory load out of a factory savage (fcp-k) and unexperienced shooter . I have never used the 308 175's though. Has someone used both and can report if the 7.62's are worse? I just ordered 3 more box's and should be trying 500yd+ within week or two.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

The one thing I have found with FGMM and M118LR is the primer. My Rem 700 action has no problem with nailing the M118LR but my Badger M2008 has a weaker spring and will contact the primer on the M118LR but will failure to fire about 30 percent of the time. I have been told a Wolf spring fixes this issue but its just something I'd figure I would mention.

If you're shooting inside of 600 yards or so get some American Eagle 168gr OTM 7.62x51mm. It's about $15/box some places, usually gets 1/3-3/4 MOA out of my Savage.

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

I used it out of 16 inch OBR out 960 yards. (12 mils) It shot sub 1/2 inch at 100 yards and shot sub moa out to 700 yards.

I called Federal. on the 7.62: Primer is crimped, brass anealing shows. Ballistics are identical to 308. I bought a bunch

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

Wow thats alot higher velocities. So if all else is the same and just velocities are higher, thats good right?

+1 Southwest Ammo ... You will NOT be disappointed!

Re: FGMM .308Win vs. 7.62X51 Nato 175gr

I made a last min decision and went w/ the southwest. I just ordered 200 rounds of it to try out. It was a lil more than the 7.62, but I had some speed inconsistencies with it. Make sure you chrono a few loads to see where you're hitting.

Any one have 20' numbers for the SW 175s?

Thanks

Ryan
