Tis that time of year again. Our pound of flesh offering for the alter known as SHC.
In the early 1940's the Navy acquired a small gaggle of P64 CRF Winchesters. Later, they made their way into the hands of the Marines. (Thieven bastages!) For a short period of time the guns were deployed during the Island campaigns of WWII. So lays the foundation for our choice of action. This one however is the modern revision now made by F/N.
Next was designing/building a variant of the clip slotted lug used on the Misfit Club's (Marine Corps) M40A3. A true slip slot on a Winny doesn't work as it'd wipe out the front screw on the rear bridge. I made a slight change by putting a slip fit lug between the two action screw holes. The front is a virtual carbon copy of the original.
Onto the barrel: A Lilja 30 caliber 10 twist Navy contour made to NAVSPEC certs around 10 years ago. We chambered it up in 300WM setup for MK248 Mod-1 ammunition. Again, a nod towards NAVSPEC and Crane.
The new PTG dbm setup for Winchesters was next. It required some machine work on the action to make it work, but thankfully it wasn't too big a deal to make it work. Using an AI mag, it runs like chit through a milk fed goose!
Tom's T5A makes for a bitchen platform to build on so it was a natural choice. The tang geometry of the stock mates perfectly on a Winchester action. This has our full service inlet/bed. We also installed our new 2.4 ULTACH hardware for the cheek piece. I also used this rifle as a lab rat to tinker with a variation of the rail type bipod mount.
A few weeks ago I was dickering around with bolt jeweling and with some creative programming I gave this old school process a new look. We've started calling it "twill weave jeweling" as it sorta resembles twill weave carbon fiber cloth. A Hide member actually commented on it when I showed it, so I ran with it (thanks whoever that was!)
Last was paint. Our variation on Navy digital camo.
Last year was LRI's first year attending the SHC. Our trophy rifle donation ended up being the "top prize" for the match winner. -Something we never expected to happen. So, it set a high bar for us and we love an encore.
Jury is still out but were hopeful...
Enjoy,
C.
