oh well...that will be later...its amazing how much room a scoped rifle takes up in a safe...and ar's take up more

Re: finally got my safe

No matter how big the safe is...you will always find more stuff to put in it.

I really like my safe but I would caution anyone buying a safe to stay away from electronic locks. I had an internal lock failure on an S&G lock and it took months to get back into it and several hundred dollars to a locksmith. Now it has a mechanical lock on it.

Re: finally got my safe

cool...i made sure mine had a mechanical lock...i looked at one a few months ago at bass pro, that the digital lock fried as the assistant went to open it...just stopped working and couldnt get into the safe

Re: finally got my safe

The trick to organizing a safe is to buy multiple. Then you have a safe for pistols, a safe for rifles, and a safe for shotguns. It always pays to be prepared. Then instead of having to dig through a safe for a shotgun thats behind rifles, you just go to the shotgun safe...

Re: finally got my safe

only thing i found was the one about using the ceiling rods...that sounds like a neat deal, and i may give it a try. i am also going to put some pistol racks in the door, and in the near future take the dividers that were supplied

Unfortunately this is the path I have taken

Re: finally got my safe

I'm curious. Is it a legal requirement to keep your firearms in a safe, or just a good way to stop thieves from stealing them?

I'm in Australia, where the laws requires all firearms, even air rifles, to be stored in an approved safe or locked hardwood box when not in use. There are strict regulations concerning how the safe is attached to the wall/floor of your home, what size bolts/screws to use, how many etc etc. The police can and do visit to ensure you are meeting the legal requirments.

Re: finally got my safe

My weekend project last week was to install pegboard on the inside of my safe door. This clears up lots of shelf space and makes a good place to hang handguns.A little piece of 1/4inch vacuum line on a 1/4inch dia peg hook keeps them from scratching anything. Pete

Here in the PRK if your gun is stolen by a "youth" and used in a crime and it wasn't in a state approved safe you can get popped for a, I believe, felony.

"you wouldnt believe how much room 2 ar15's take up, ugh"

That's a problem I'd love to have. Last AR15 I saw for sale here was $US9000 for a stock standard early model AR15 in good condition. I would have paid that without a second's hesitation, but you also needed special permission from the police to buy it (meaning you had to be a professional shooter engaged in culling large animals). 30 round AR mags are selling for $US270 each. Makes me almost cry when I see them selling for $10 or $15 in the States.

Re: finally got my safe

My cousin told me that when he went safe shopping a salesman told him that he was better off with an electric lock because it was easier to replace if it was tampered with or damaged from an attempted break in. The ruined keypad comes off and the new one goes on versus a much more spendy and in depth repair of a mechanical combination lock. Now whether this holds water or the man was just trying to make a sale I don't know but it's something to think about.

Where did you get it from. Im 2 hours out of DFW and willing to drive to get a good deal. Does AMSEC charge more/less for different colors/finishes?

Re: finally got my safe

i got it at Carter's country here in Houston. i dont know what they charge for different finishes. here is what mine looks like

if you have a friend or two with a good furnature dolly, or a fridge dolly, you should be fine...mine weighs just a hair under 600lbs dry.

Re: finally got my safe

nice safe man. i guess you have already put stuff in it, but did you take any pics before you did?

i think he is just talking about keypads in general. electronic keypads also have keys. my bud has a combo lock, doesnt even know the combo. has it written down but uses a key instead. i keep new batteries handy as well as the key. but i also sleep with a 45 under my pillow.

unfortunately, i dont have before and after pictures...i do however have a filled up picture...and when my rifle rods come in ill post a pic of that. the key on mine is only there to lock the dial. i can lock the dial in the unlocked position, or in the locked position. i have just heard too many horror stories from people that had electronic locks...infact i watched one fail right infront of me at basspro.

They said since I installed the lock they wouldnt cover it. You have to have a certified lock installer to install it for them to cover it. (I didnt know it was so hard to screw in 4 phillips screws and plug it in). So I called the John Deere house that I bought it from and they are going to replace the safe and pay all the locksmith fees. S/G lock and Liberty Safe. BTW it is way too easy to get in one with a grinder

Re: finally got my safe

So, do you like the rods?

Did they give you room for more guns, or just make it easier to access them?

I've got a similar safe, but all of my rilfes are on one side. The shelves on the other side are packed pretty full. A lot of it is ammo, but I'm not crazy about having that just sit around either.

Just curious what you think of them now that you have them? Should probably ask this in a few weeks, after you've used them for a while too.

Re: finally got my safe

it actually gave more room...i can stick another 3 or 4 scoped rifles in it. from the looks of it i can also fit another ar or 2 in there. as for how i like them...they seem really strong, the guns have a slight wobble when you first put them in, but nothing bad, the shotguns are the ones i see move the most when i put them in, but everything is sitting nicely now. as for my ammo, i keep it in rubber maid tubs ontop of my safe, and if i really feel the need, ill put it in a security cabinet. but the rubbermaid tubs work for me.

Hell, my safe couldn't go into the house. It weighs almost 4000 lbs. It's a used Amsec composite TL rated safe. It had to go into the garage. It sucks with the temp variation, but I have desiccant packs in it, and am planning on running electric into it for a golden rod or similar....plus buying a safe for inside the house mainly for the scoped guns.

I went with a mechanical S&G lock PLUS a keyed "day lock". I can leave the dial unlocked and get in and out with the key. No way in hell it can be picked either (as far as I can tell) due to the lock being a good 5"-6" inside the door. The key is like 6 plus inches long! Also adds a second line of defense against breaching if the dial lock is compromised.
