I wanted to make my own, because I'd really like to make a big one, maybe 2 foot X 4 foot or so, which would be useful for my blackpowder flintlock, my not-so-precision rifle... My first attempts didn't work.

I tried paint on paper, paint on plastic, paint on mold release on plastic, plastic on fluorescent orange paper, etc.

Finally, I've got something that works. Paint on silicone coated paper. Three BB's for reference also. See here:

I figured if it works with a bb gun, it should work with 175 SMKs or similar. This sample is krylon black paint, and the silicone coated paper is the backing sheet for some sample label material that I've had for years. The backing sheet for something like Avery labels should be the same. In the pic below, the marker beads up on the backing sheet, this is what allows the paint to flake off. It took 3 coats to paint the sample, as the paint beads up also.

Next step will be to try silicone coated paper that is used for cooking or for wrapping meat. And to see if cheap latex paint will work also.

Re: Finally made my own shoot n c

I think he did it because he wants to make a really large one. I am not sure Shoot*N*C's come in the 2 foot size. Kind of wish they did though.......

Not a bad idea. If you happen to have the labels laying around and ratlle can in the garage, you are good to go. I might just have to give it a try.

Granted, it's a helluva lot easier to just go by a pack of targets for normal use, but hey, who cares.

I wonder if the plasticoated butcher paper would work the same for the larger targets?

LMAO!! Sorry, I had a good laugh at that one...

My "shoot & C" target is reuseable. It's very simple. It's a steel plate hung on chains. Just needs a quick spray of paint to make it new again. And it is a "shoot and c and hear" model!

This....

Simple white paint on steel works, quick and easy.

Recoat as needed....

Years ago when I shot some local stuff weekly at a sportsman's club they first hit the steel with a coat of orange line marking paint, then topped it with plain old cheap flat white. Hits showed up nice and clear.

I have a couple of the E-type plastic backers that I picled up at a surplus store, problem is you cant see hits at all. They make a loud whack when hit at 1K but no spot. Been thinking about painting orange primer, then shooting with non stick cooking spray, and following with a white cover coat to see if the white will turn loose on impact revealing the orange.
