Earlier today I was cruising back to college from a visit home. The roads were terrible because we just got a Lake Michigan effect snow storm. As I am cruising I see to smashed cars on either side of the road. So I stopped, one other person had also stopped. I checked on the first car, they were alright, checked on the other car and a guy had climbed out of his car and was laying face down in the snow groaning in pain. So I stabilized his neck, we rolled him onto his back. I held C spine and directed a few others to check his extremities and pulses in the meantime. Another EMT trained person pulled over and started asking the past history questions, etc. This guy was pretty banged up, had severe neck pain. EMS eventually showed up and took over. Hopefully he is alright. I am glad I got trained as an EMT. Very handy skills. Anybody else have any similar stories? I would like to here them.

Re: Finally put the EMT training to use.

We had a National Gard Hero who used his EMT skills for us at Fort Stewart.

The NG barracks were not staffed 24/7 due to training rotations. A guy went into one of the shower bays and hung himself. He was there long enough that he was in full rigor mortise when Hero came along.

He cut the guy down and broke his jaw open to give him CPR. True Story. CID went ape shit. I laughed so damned hard. Dude was trying to bring a piece of beef jerky back to life. ha ha ha

I digress.

Good job, man!

1) The training definitely comes in handy in life. Having kids, I would say it's almost necessary.

2) Being a "hero" is about as glamorous as HEP C

Always nice to hear someone put their skills to use. I would much rather have an EMT that doesn't really use his/her skills on scene when we get there than a hospital nurse or doctor. 20 years in Fire/EMS I've been on quite a few scenes where an RN or Dr. is there and they have to make it a point to tell you and they don't know shit about pre-hospital care.

Rob brings up a valid point on BSI. You have the skills and you should always keep a few pairs of gloves in your vehicle at minimum.

Good job on stopping and quite possibly preventing some bystander from causing a c-spine injury.

Unfortunately I didn't have any gloves, that was the first thought that ran through my head. I did use hand sanitizer immediately after. I am definitely going to start carrying some in my car now though.
