Just bought a .338 Lapua Mag. 700 police with a 40x action and trigger. I haven't even put the scope on yet( waiting for the base) but I am in the middle of reloading fot it. If anyone has one of these, what is your C.O.A.L. From what I understand the .338 likes a bullet seated about .0010" to 0020" seated off the lands. Any information would be helpful. I am shooting 250 smk's and 300 smk's with Lapua brass and 215m primers. When I say any information I mean ANY info on getting the best out ofthis rifle. thanks.

Since it's a stock Rem 700P I don't believe anyone here can tell you the exact OAL to use. You will have to buy a gauge to tell yourself that since I've seen some 700P 308's vary considerably from gun to gun. If you go of someone else's OAL you possibly could be jamming it into the lands and making it an unsafe load with over pressure.

this may be a cheapskate way of doing it but here is what i do. Take an empty sized case and cut a slit in one side of the neck. then take a bullet and put it in the neck, seated out much longer than you would ever seat a normal bullet. The trick here is to cut the case so you have enough neck tension to allow the bullet to slide in and out of the case, but not so tight that it sticks. You should be able to remove the bullet with your fingers.

next take your long seated cartridge and carefully chamber it, and lock the bolt. Then very very carefully unlock the bolt and gingerly extract the cartridge make sure it doesn't eject and go flying.

Now take your cartridge and measure it.....I measure to the Ogive to get the most consistent reading. do this several times and average the measurments (if done right they should all be fairly close) and that it the length you need to be at the lands in your particular rifle.

Or buy a fancy gauge .......whatever you want this is America.
