I'm repurposing some office furniture cabinets into a reloading bench and need to mount a countertop. Thinking of using with a butcher block slab or a prefab laminate countertop they use for kitchens:

If I go with the butcher block, do you guys with woodworking experience have any recommendations on how to finish it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

As you probably will mount / screw some stuff on it, I would go with the more stable butcher thingy.

How to finish it?
Well, you can use any wood paint for the outdoors, which is a bit water resistant if you want.
Or you just let time do the job and get it some patina.

I second the butcher block top. It will give you a really solid work surface that will last. As far as a finish, they look great when left natural but a nicely stained and sealed top really pops.

There are some great ideas in this thread:

I was thinking the laminate as it's smooth and easier to clean. I was going to mount it on 3/8 or 1/2 plywood so stability will not be an issue.

Is a clear varnish not a good idea?

I like butcher block and clear poly sealant. You can always give it a quick sanding and re-coat if it needs it in the future.

I did laminate counter tops on mine and have no regrets. I've spilled all kinds of chemicals on them, let hot brass from annealing sit on them... they are holding up really well.
