about to get my first bolt action rifle. It is a Remington 700 sps .308 ADL. now I'm looking for a piece of glass to put on it and im looking at a "Barska SWAT 8-32x44 IR Tactical Rifle Scope"
has anyone ever used or know anyone who has used a barska scope?
Any information on this scope or others you have used would be great. Im looking around the 300-600 price range

Re: First bolt gun!

If it says Barska on it just keep looking. I've never seen one that was worth what was paid for it and thats pretty terrible considering the price. A friend bought the exact scope your looking at. Looks pretty tacti-cool but I've seen better glass attached to pellet rifles. Take a look at leupold, nikon, burris and sightron and I'm sure somebody will chime in with a few other quality brands. In my opinon its hard to beat a nikon monarch for the money. Always remember clarity matters more than magnification

Re: First bolt gun!

Thank you guys for the info. On a separate note this will be the first longer range rifle that I am putting together. I have been shooting my AR15 with iron sights for a few years now and decided I really wanted to reach out a bit further.

Re: First bolt gun!

Can't believe no one has said it yet, but check out the SWFA Super Sniper. SWFA has a GREAT deal on them right now, the brand new SS 3-9 in a full kit, rings and everything for $599. The previous generation of SS's go for $300 or so. They are probably the best deal dollar for dollar, as far as optics go.

I have one (20x42) that is fantastic. PM me if you are interested.

Steer clear of the Barska.

+1 me and my buddy both have a SWFA 10x42 on our 700's and have had no problems, definitely a great deal for the price!

Re: First bolt gun!

DO NOT BUY BARSKA!!
They are crap, (my opinion), my dad always said they were gtg but he has always been a budget glass kinda guy. I bought the same scope you were mentioning ans when I turned the magnification up past about 8x it looked as if someone was pouring milk on my objective lens. VERY FOGGY looking, no amount of "side focus" or paralax adjustment could cure this problem. luckily I bought it from Midway who has a great return policy and they gave me full credit for it. Super snipers are great from everything I have heard especially the new HD ones.

Re: First bolt gun!

Stay away from the low-dollar scope tourist traps of magnification and so-called 'features'. get a Mil Dot reticle. If you want to save money buy a fixed power scope.

I have never looked through one, but everything I have ever seen about them is negative.

If you are really on a tight budget, get the Bushnell 3200 10x tactical, an EGW 20MOA base and a set of burris XTR low rings. The entire setup would come in under 300 bucks. Other than that your options are a bit limited. Nikon Buckmaster 4-14, Millet TRS-1, Super Sniper 10x, Konus M30 Series. They can all be had in the 300 range. You will need to budget about 100 dollars for a decent set of rings and a decent base, EGW and Burris XTR will come in at that mark and they are an excellent set up.

Re: First bolt gun!

I knew someone with a Barfska. After I was done laughing my ass off at him for really expecting it to work and trying to get it on paper at 25m, we threw it in the garbage. The lenses were BLUE, by the way. The turrets were for show, the clicks did nothing.

Re: First bolt gun!

I think Ares might be joking around some..........if not I apologize but naming Barska and Springfield scopes in one thread?? Come on........if a guy knows about the short time career of Springfield in the scope game how can you learn that but not know Baska is junk ..not even a good toy and that Springfield made scopes without stubbling along some true scope info.

Although last week on Gunbroker I saw a "custom builder" of sorts advertising a nice looking rig and it had a S/A scope and they wanted like a grand for the scope!!! At least the S/A scopes are heavy enough to use an anchor or blunt force weapon if needed.

Re: First bolt gun!

Lol... not joking around... just very new to the shooting world and everything that comes with it...I have alot of information to take in...i'm getting alot of suggestions both on this forum and from friends of mine... as far as the Springfield scope goes i was poking around on ebay and saw a few. and again to everyone on the hide I really appreciate all the info that you have given me over the last few days.
