Hey guys I'm building my first gun with a lot of help from a good friend and local gunsmith. He will do some of the advanced machining with me doing all the hand work. It will eventually be a .280 ackley improved with a leupold vx3 4.5x14x50 for deer hunting and some long distance shooting. I'm looking for some advice, do's, dont's, etc from some more experienced hands than me. I'm going to be using a remington 700 action and a richards micro-fit stock in straight line thumbhole (already ordered). I'm still debating on a barrel, I'm looking into a #3 shilen, douglas, or pac-nor. They are all pretty close in price. I am wanting the barrel and action to be matte black, duracoat maybe..? It will also be my first experience with hand loads so if anyone has some favorite loads, im interested in info and best primers brass etc. I will try to keep everyone updated on progress as i go and looking forward to the advice discussion this will surely bring up.

Maybe you should ditch the part of your post trying to sell shit.

Lots of people on here have the 280 Ackley's
I have 2.

One is a Rem Sendero Contour the other is a #3

2 options for Brass. Nosler custom which is formed for the ackley or 280 Rem Brass fireformed. I have done both the nosler cost more but if you factor per piece after fireforming its kinda cheaper.

Have dealt with Richards microfit and will never use them again unless I want a project. You can get a boyds finished which is the Laminate you see or get a McM which is an even better choice.

Ditch the Duracoat. Its thick and there are better coatings out there these days.
