Just what I have narrowed down in my own personal likes/dislikes. Any input is appreciated though.

+1, You are severely limiting yourself by only accepting those two. Of the two you mention I would strongly recommend the .308 as well, however, in the budget range of those two rifles, there are many strong choices that I would pick over either of those for a beginner shooter. The Remington 5R would get a nod, as well as many of the used rifles found in the FS regularly for around $1K

Thank You! One question, the reason for chosing another option would be, easier to shoot, better quality, more forgiving?

Re: First Long Range Rifle

Well, there is nothing wrong with a Savage rifle, I just think you would do better to choose a different caliber than the .270 if you are serious about long range work. The .270 has great ballistics, but not as big of a following, so it doesn't have the support for bullets and brass. There are many proven and great calibers available that are doing very well in matches. .260 would be an awesome choice for the first go. but the .308 has a great adavantage over most choices because it is so readily available, and you can buy excellent quality match ammo. That said the .260 is produced by Black Hills, and the 6.5 Creedmoor can be had fairly easily for reasonable money, but finding a factory chambering might be tough.

For the same money as you can get into the DPMS, you could get a savage action, a nice stock, and a nice creedmoor barrel build. That would be one hell of a starting package...

Why? The DPMS has a much larger following and better aftermarket support.

If you'd like my opinion I'd suggest a Remington, but I'm a bit partial since I own two of them.

The best way is to go with an aftermarket system. If you are going with a savage rifle CDI Precision and I think D-Bull make DBM setups for them. They are typically in the $300 range and cost around $60 to have the stock inletted for them.

Jeremiah </div></div>Why? Because the Armalite is just a better platofrm for many reasons. I don't want to get into the DPMS vs Armalite debate, but what you stated above just isn't true, especially in the .308 platform. Besides, does that make a DPMS a better rifle?

For strictly long range accuracy, I agree on the bolt rifle over the semi auto, but IMO they both have their place.

Re: First Long Range Rifle

For a first LR rifle, I'd say keep it simple... Rem 5R in .308, put some decent glass on top, get any other accessories you think you might like, pick up some Fed Match 168gr, an head out to the range. From there you'll be able to figure out what, if anything, you don't like.

Re: First Long Range Rifle

I am MORE THAN HAPPY with my LR308. If I had it all to do over again, I would have it in a 260. Ballistics aren't 100% better than the 308 but they ARE better.

Out to 600 yds the DPMS will serve you well. Fun to shoot as well! I do agree that if long range accuracy is going to be your game, then a bolt will serve you better.

How about the rem STS in 243. The 1/9.25 barrel will work fine for the hornady 105's and the ballistics and low recoil of the 243 just plain KICK ASS!!!!!

Caliber is a debate as old as time but there is an aggreance that a bolt will generally yeild better accuracy.

Re: First Long Range Rifle

Thanks for all the follow up guys. I have looked quite heavily into a 700 5R setup. Im assuming going rate is in the 1k range for the gun? Is there any reason not to go with a Super Sniper Scope?

Re: First Long Range Rifle

no there is no reason not to use a supper sniper scope. I have a 5r with an AI 20 stock with a mark 4 25 power but i used my friends supper sniper for a bit they are nice for the $. A 5r goes for 1100 the stock I never liked so I went with the AI 2.0 for a 1000.

I have looked at that weapon...very nice! The only thing that I dont like about the 700 5R is that it does not have a detachable mag.
