Hey, everyone... been lurking here off and on for a few years and thought I'd finally join the team. I'm a Kansas LEO and was with a 400,000 size department for about 8 years and recently moved to a much smaller department for a better schedule to keep my marriage. I'm my department's designated sniper (was just certified through KLETC in October - 1 week Sniper School). With our department's budget, I have to furnish most of my own gear. I use a Remington 700 SPS Tac - with a HS Precision PTS012 on the way, Falcon Menace 4X14X44 FFP (though I've started a Nightforce NXS savings jar), Burris XTR rings, TacOps cheek/ammo pad and Harris Bipod. For a patrol rifle, I use my own Smith & Wesson M&P15T all decked out with the latest Magpul stuff - because looking cool is half the battle.

I just sold a Trijicon Tripower sight with an CC&G accucam mount and I'm currently running a Trijicon Reflex sight but have the money to finally buy a TA33r ACOG, though I'm not sure if I want the chevron reticle or the horseshoe. I'll be posting a question about this sight on the appropriate thread. I owe many of you a loud "thank you" for advice that I read on SH and applied to different weapon builds or tactics.

I'm going to assume that you were helping to police a municipality with a population of 400,000? That's equivalent to just about all the cops in South Korea! Anyway, nice of you to have surfaced after lurking -- it saves having to explain Shanky, etc.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

Yeah, sorry. City of around 400,000. Department size 700 or so. SANDRAT, thanks for the kind words. Drives me crazy when I hear other officers not know what model Glock they carry, or what exactly the caliber is of their AR and stuff like that. I get tired of the bare minimum knowledge (if that) of what should be the most important tools we use.

Welcome to the Hide. It's always nice to have a fellow lawman among the ranks.

Not really, but it sounds nicer to say that there is, doesn't it?

"I use my own Smith & Wesson M&P15T all decked out with the latest Magpul stuff - because looking cool is half the battle"

THAT is the funniest line I have seen for a while! For that entry rifle, I would advise using only the gear you need to make the rifle do the job. Excessive BS adds weight, and weight takes away performance. As to the sight, use what works the best and is the fastest aquisition for YOU, not someone else becuase it's your life and their's that is at risk when you use that rifle.

I think someone's tattoo must read "<span style="font-weight: bold">h</span>ummin<span style="font-weight: bold">a</span> hummina <span style="font-weight: bold">h</span>ummin<span style="font-weight: bold">a</span>" ?

Wow, your 13th post and you've already written an instant classic

"...because looking cool is half the battle."

We'll be seeing that one around here for a long time. Longer probably than "minute of duck."

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

Thanks. Looking cool really isn't any part of the battle, but I do like some of Magpul's stuff. I haven't weighed down my AR, but I do have the CTR stock, rail covers and the MIAD grip. The P-mags of course. I'm not a full out operator, but I'm no mall ninja.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

Holy crap, you have to furnish most of your own gear? So they issue evry community college graduate cop a service glock pistol and they cant even give you a little help on a scope. Im not trying to disrespect you at all but thats seriously wrong if you in fact are telling the truth.

Unless people are spouting obvious BS, give them the benefit of the doubt.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

Same here my AR is my AR that I bought and set up, and if used in a use of force, its subject to the same evidence collection and requirement as my issued duty weapon.Alot of Deptartments are doing that because of budget. They put the officers who want to carry one through a 2 day training course and you requalify yearly. The nice thing about it is they supply the ammo for you, so you can get some trigger time in.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

Small departments will do this... however, I would rather use my AR setup than a stock Bushmaster they'd probably buy. For anything other than our sidearms, our department's policy is to allow officer to purchase and carry their own tactical shotguns and AR's. Zerbra 308 is right. The serial numbers are registered to the department and they would be subject to the same evidence collection procedures if you pulled the trigger on one. The long range 308 is pretty much the same thing. If our department starts getting more money in, I may have them help me upgrade that, but it's fine for now. And buying a $1500 NF isn't a "little help" on a scope in their eyes. They'd look at me as if I was crazy and offer a Tasco.

Better to finance your own Leupold and walk with it if you go elsewhere.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

I agree. My patrol rifle build is pretty much done, so I can keep socking away money for a better scope. Lot of Leupold haters on this sight though. I've used quite a few different ones and haven't had any issues, though I haven't messed with a NF other than drooling over them at the shop.

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

"Welcome aboard LEO brother....Im not a leupold hater have a few of them on my personal sticks. My dept issue in a Remy 700p with a leupold 3.5x10.gotta work with what your issued."

Unfortunately, my issued stuff is what I can personally afford - for the designated marksman system and patrol rifle, at least. Out of the 24 guys in sniper school, about 20 of them had Leupold MK4's, so they can't be too bad. I've used them before and thought they were good stuff. Better than the Falcon Menace I was sporting.

I don't know where that came from. Why wouldn't he be telling the truth? I'm sure he isn't proud that his department is not buying the stuff for him. The only advantage he has to buying it himself is that he gets the setup he wants and doesn't have to deal with department budget or argue with other officers over which item is best for a group.

A lot of smaller departments, especially in south Georgia, require officers to buy
their own stuff. This isn't uncommon, but is unfortunate. I am surprised, however, that a department his size isn't providing it for him.

Congratulations on completing CS School. I hope you at least get a 5 or 10 percent pay raise for being on call and being required to purchase so much equipment out of pocket. If you don't, your sanity is in question.......

Re: First post from long time LEO lurker...

I spent about 7 years at a large department (pop- 400,000) and am now with a much smaller suburb department (pop - 7,000). No pay raise, but any type of call out is comp time, which sucks compared to overtime. I've been tasked with developing my department's sniper/designated marksman policy, so much of this (save the shooting) is new to me. My chief wanted it - I had the equipment (albeit not the best stuff), so I volunteered to do it - and loved it. We'll probably have next to zero callouts but I want to be as prepared as possible if we do. Most of my weapon system was already personally owned, so my expense thus far has been minimal. Though my NF NXS jar is getting more full every day. At least I didn't have to pay for the training or ammo. They, thankfully, picked up the tab on that.
