Hey all.

I'm about to fire my first reloads of ammo. Should I be nervous about anything? I followed everything to a "T" and started with a middle charge of powder.

I'm a little nervous for some reason, maybe because I'm not trusting my own abilities to follow directions and produce safe ammo. Which I know I did. Please let me know what I should be looking for if anything at all. Thanks.

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

I'd take some factory ammo with you just in case. It really sucks when you start out reloading and get to the range and find out your ammo is no good, then have nothing to shoot.

As long as your case dimensions are good, and the charge weight and powder type are good, you should be safe. I think there is a little pucker factor for everyone the first time they pull the trigger on their own reloads

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

you might want to take a #2 before you go out.then this way when the first round goes off it want scare the crap out of ya.not just keep in mind of your safety and go have fun.reloading can be so fun and help take care of all yor problems.and seeing a what used to be a 2 inch group become a .2 or .3 something group is all that matters.

Thanks for all the good insight.

I might just do that and get it out of the way.

That's what I'm looking for. I really appreciate the kind words. I will have to let you all know how it all turned out. If I don't post anything after a week....you know something went a little wrong.

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

I think most people are a little nervous the first time they fire their own loaded rounds. It's just like anything else, the more you do it, the more comfortable you feel (Ahem... that's what she said). Enjoy your newfound hobby!

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

I agree 100%. But once you shoot your reloads the disease will start, and there is no known cure. It can get very bad. Just take it slow and ENJOY. You will find yourself shooting more and more. Good shooting.

LMAO. I figured so! So when my wife asks what's wrong with me, this is what I can tell her.

don't go dying on us. I know a guy that loaded for the first time and blew the firing pin thought his skull and they found it stuck in the radiator in the jeep behind him. There is a good chance that is what is going to happen to you.

Very true. I will take the necessary precautions when firing my reloads, and I will post my results when I do. Thanks a ton guys for the words of encouragement.....and by the way, I already have that same disease.

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

Jesus you havn't been to the range yet, arent they burning a hole in your range bag? I just fired my first reloads on Saturday, worked up some new test loads last night for tomorrow. Hopefully I will have my 208amax load figured out with these next 30 rounds. Anyways I'll cut to the point, quit being a PUSSY and go have fun!

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

I spoke with my buddy who is a reloader and MD!

The name for relaoders disease! "BANKUSDEPELTUS"

It can be very costly! Even known to have ended some marraiges! LOL!

However, the 50BMG supplys I purchased have tripled and even 6x the price now! Good investments compared to what the wife did with her $$$$!

I will be going this weekend, hopefully. My daughter kind of takes precedents over going to the range. I'm sure some of you understand......but yes they are burning a hole.

I don't think there is one of us that doesn't understand. We all have a hard time dealing with the "stink face" when you get an hour to squeeze in some range time...

Did you get a chance to try out your loads this weekend? What calibers are you starting with?

I am finally getting time this weekend.....I have been waiting patiently. I am starting with with my .300 win mag. I loaded 4 different loads.

150 SGK
IMR 4895 - 61.5 grains

150 SGK
AA 4350 - 71.5 grains

168 Hornady match
IMR 4895 - 61.9 grains

168 Hornady match
AA 4350 - 67.3 grains

I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks for all your support with my new endeavor. Oh yeah let me know if these loads sound suitable.

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

Man I was nervous as shit the first time I fired my own reloads. I seriously had to talk myself into it.

I'll be honest, I moved my head away from the rifle for the first one.

Then I shot my first .5 group that day and was hooked.

Now I'm broke and eating rice and beans to save up for a Giraud trimmer!

Re: First time firing reloaded ammo

Finally made it out to go shooting this afternoon. Talk about having to talk yourself into pulling the trigger the first time. After that, it was smooth sailing.

I noticed the 168 gr, shot better than the 150 gr. The IMR 4895 powder load was a little much, and had some flat primers.....but they shot AWESOME!!!! All in all, things went great and can't wait to get things fine tuned and really get some good groups.

The outside cases have the flat primers.

All my shots were taken from 200 yrds.

Loved the IMR 4895 with the 168 Hornady Match bullets.
