First time with Hornady OAL gauge - .308

Re: First time with Hornady OAL gauge - .308

Is this a 700 with a factory chamber ?

If so, you might check out:

Type 2 mags allow for a COAL of 2.985 but require some mods to your feed ramp to function the way you want it.

I didn't have the wisdom you have now when I had a 700 so I never measured mine. I've read several threads recently discussing long chambers in the stock 700 and that sounds right.

Thanks. I'll see what happens with the 2.87 and then see if i need to go longer.

Lawyer throats for sure. I bet you will be ok at mag length. Maybe try some single loading too and see if there is enough of a difference to warrant the Type 2 mags?
