I traded for this gun last week so it is slightly used.It came with a Tasco Varmint 6-24X42mm scope (not the best but figured I would try it anyways).Shooting off a bi-pod the first thing I noticed is the terrible X-mark trigger (not happy with it at all).Never really got any good groups worth posting but I really think alot was the trigger.

I really expected to see better groups but I am a little rusty so don't make fun of my groups to bad.

I did a couple 5 shot groups with each listed at a fairly fast pace.

Listed from best performing to worst.

1)BHA 77 gr.MK Best group(1.5) and most constant

2) BHA 69 gr. MK Best group(1.75)

3) CHEAP Monarch 55 gr. Bought 20 from a co-worker for $5 and glad I didn't buy anymore...LOL

I was shooting with a cross winds 15 MPH gust (Left to Right) 100 yards.

I have done alot of reading on this gun and most claim lighter bullets for the 1 in 9 twist. Was this just a fluke or are other people having better luck with the heavier bullets.

Re: First Trip with REM. 5R 223

I'm pretty sure with a 5R your groups should be at least half of those numbers (not trying to sound rude...lol).
I'd tear it down - and go over everything (rings/base/check the stock/barrel relationship/ect). I'd even try different glass to rule that out.
Even 15 mph winds at 100 yards shouldn't affect accuracy that much.

Re: First Trip with REM. 5R 223

Do you reload? If so try 25.3 grains of Varget with the 69smk seated 2.255ish in Winchester or LC brass.

I agree with the above, double check everything and verify the barrel is floated.

If it was the wind, you would be seeing a "string" effect on your target with little vertical.

Re: First Trip with REM. 5R 223

I really don't think the wind was the problem.I really feel like it was mainly the crappy trigger plus it was the first time with the gun.I just figured the way everyone was talking up the 69 gr. they would have done better.I am going to try some more ammo plus put a timney in to take away any excuses.lol....I have a leupold that ill try on there also just not a fan of the tasco.

Re: First Trip with REM. 5R 223

I'd be trying the Leupy scope before slapping the Timney in (I love my Timney's though - can't go wrong there)....even with a stock Bushy 14.5" and crappy-ass 9 lb mil-spec AR trigger - I can do 1"-1.25" at 100......I would almost guarantee the Tasco scope. I'd try to find your problem before slapping parts at it.
Just my opinion...

First, get some work done on the X mark trigger. My rifle smith can make them sweet enough braking at a tad over 2 lbs. I like mine for the field.

Second, check the mounts and if you have a better quality scope put that on too. I don't rate Tasco's at all since they stopped making them in Japan.

Third, check your bedding screws are firm tight but not excessively tight.

Forth make sure you are shooting off a good platform, a truck or wooden bench isn't. Try from bags, (don't overly load the bipod, or just get an Atlas).

Lastly, try some other quality ammunition, something from Hornady.
