well i have it narrowed down to two knives, and would like your input on which of the two you like best.

#1 boker applegate

OR

mod mark v

now according to my understanding the mod mark v is no longer in production... so i like it a bit more cause its rare, i dont need two knives as i already have a mod mark 1.

so what do you think

Re: fixed blade knife vote

The bokerlooks like a useful knife. The mod looks like something they sell in the mall to make a kid feel like he is bad ass

Re: fixed blade knife vote

The applegate fairburn knives are notorious for having handle issues. The original design by Col. Applegate had a shortened unsupported tang which was a source of serious handle issues on many makers knives. I have one made by Blackjack before they went out of business and it has the standard chunk out of the back of the handle with minimal light duty use.

I did a little google search and it "seems" the Boker has addressed the unsupported tang issue, but you might want to dig a little deeper and be sure.

As for the Mod Mark IV, I agree with Sled Dog in that the fantasy knife styling doesn;t scream practical use to me.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

the hooks on the mark v are for pulling and prying. i remember in an old black hawk magazine they showed some pretty cool stuff you could do with the hooks.

You ask what we think you should choose for a knife, but do not say what you will use it for. Will you use it for anything? If not, just some taticool thing. If so, choose the one that will do the job you intend to do and has the steel you prefer. JMO

I vote for something with a little more utility than opening an MRE.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

What do you want to do with the knife (or what need do you have to fill)?

If you absolutely HAVE to chose from one of those, I'd opt for the Boker because as far as I'm concerned...the MOD is a whole lotta show and a lot less in terms of utility/functionality! (i.e. - the MOD will look good in a display case, but probably won't be anywhere near an ideal field knife unless you are engaged in mortal, hand-to-hand combat with an alien).

I like those, what model is that? Or is it a custom job? I didn't see it on Mr. Johnson's website.

Cost?

Thanks!

Re: fixed blade knife vote

No contest,Chris Reeve's Pacific or his Neil Roberts Warrior both are topshelf blades that will handle anything or sitiuation that comes their way. If you can only have one knife check Chris's products out.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

Those were custom orders I made from Mr.Brian Johnson while I was in Iraq. $195 per copy without sheaths, I put together some stout leather for them in the evenings during my last tour. I think his knives are an extraordinary value.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

Ohhh, I didn't know we were going to start with the knife porn. Can I play?

Some good real heavy use knives (The BOSS Street is the only user of these 3):

Top - Busse Custom Shop Satin Jack Prototype Camo (old)
Middle - Neil Roberts Warrior BUD/S
Bottom - Busse BOSS Street

Would trust any of them

Here is one that Gerber no longer makes and is a good knife, especially if you want to use the "now that's a knife" line in your best Paul Hogan voice.
Posted next to the BOSS Street for size comparison.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

iam not john rambo by any means... iam also not in any branch of the armed forces. so what would i use the knife for...honestly umm nothing really.

My mark 1 just sits in my glove box waiting untill i plung my truck into a river so i can use the glass breaker to free my self from a watery grave. Honestly i really have not used it dispite the 300 dollar price tag... long bladed knives such as a boker or dark ops knife or the mark v would see even less attention out side of showing them to buddies and placing them in a back pack i have set up for camping ( which iam usually to lazy to go ) so ya thats about it.

was just curious if any one liked one or the other of these better and why

Re: fixed blade knife vote

black_ump,
Sorry man I just got carried away. I like knives

Of the two you listed, I think the Boker would be a good knife. However, other people have suggested some good blades in the price range of the boker. As I noted above, make sure they fixed the unsupported tang issue in the Applegate Fairburn design.

However, for the same price (~150) you can get an Esse RC4 or 5 (blade length) that will in my oppinion be a better knife.

Hope that helps,

Very nice! What's the thickness? 1/4"?

Very good looking blades, and you did a real nice job on the leather as well! Thanks for the info!

As far as the other options go Black_Ump, definitely take a look at the ESEE line for hard use blades that wont break the bank! I'd love to have a Busse or two, but honestly I can't bring myself to pay that kind of money. For that price range an ESEE 5 would be the ticket for me, plus you would come in with $$ to spare.

As far as the ESEE blades go, I don't think you can get much more value per dollar then their blades..

Re: fixed blade knife vote

black_ump,
I would take a look at Brian Johnsons website http://bkjohnsonknives.com/ . I am sure he has something in the size you are looking for and around the price you are looking for. I owned the blackjack version of the Boker you sited above, I have had several Chris Reeve knives, I own a Robert Parrish, the original 8" version of the Gerber BMF cited above and many more. For what Mr. Johnson charges you get a hell of a knife, and yes, mine are 1/4" thick. His handmade knives are far better and more durable than most of the production knives you will find, this goes for most handmade knives. Stay away from the bling (MOD and others). Just because it looks flashy does not mean it will perform. I prefer a larger knife, it can always take care of the smaller tasks and you have the size for the larger tasks when you need it.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

Everyone's cool factor is different. Neither really suit my fancy but if they work for you.. grab whichever you like. I prefer something like a Bark River or EESE. They will do anything you ask of them and at a decent price.

Re: fixed blade knife vote

2 things to think about with those 2 knives

boker, im sure it is a good knife but being double edge you will have no place to put your thumb for spine pressure if you are doing detailed carving of any type & if you need it to split wood in a pinch & need to use a baton it will chew up the baton in no time.

the mod is recurve & serrated so the only method to sharpen it would be a spyderco sharpmaker, just kind of a pain unless you get one of those diamond steel type sharpeners.
i'm also kind of clumsy so those hooks would get me i know it.

This all depends on your use too I may be way off, its just what i thought if first.
