I'm making this post with the intent to present facts, not engage in bashing. If anyone has information that would help me understand what's going on, I'd love to hear it, because I just can't keep up with all the 'behind the scenes' stuff in the firearms world.

Last November 16, I placed and order for a Lawton 8000 action. I still have the copy of the invoice which I may post online, as everyday it goes unfulfilled is another nail in Lawton's coffin. Certain promises were made when I ordered the action, and the following certainly classifies as hearsay, but suffice it to say that the action was not delivered as promised ("we've got one we can re-serialize" and have it to you in two weeks"). Later, multiple excuses were made; trying to be the understanding nice guy (read: sucker), I went along with them. I even ordered a barrel in May to be threaded and chambered to the action. To date, I have receieved nothing; no believeable explanations, and I'm pretty certain that I'm out $2000. If the management at Lawton is this messed up, I can't believe the quality of the product is going to be any better. At one point, they blamed the delay on getting bolt stops from a well known supplier; I called the supplier after getting off the phone with Lawton and he said basically that Lawton was right, there was a delay in getting the bolt stops, because Lawton hadn't paid for them. The bolt stop supplier even furnished me with a bolt stop for a Lawton 8000 action, which I believe is likely as close as I'll ever get to seeing one of these actions.

I've got one of XLR Industry's stocks, a NightForce Scope, a Jewell Trigger, a Barrett Bipod, and other various and sundry bits lying around waiting to put this rifle together once I get the barrelled acton. In 20 years, I've never waited this long for a barrelled action, or run into such a stone wall of silence from people who have a huge chunk of my money. The only way to contact them is email; there is nobody answering the phones, and phone messages I've left have gone unanswered - absolutely useless, they may as well pull the phone line out of the wall.

At this point in time, I believe I'll never see anything from Lawton. It's a shame, I think Barney would be horrified judging from the long conversations I had with him. And if this post gets under their skin, so be it; I don't think they have enough of a concept of 'customer service' for it to make a difference.

So, if anyone is planning on doing business with Lawson, I'm not discouraging it, just saying you may want to check around and see what their customer satisfaction has been to date. Here's the latest email response from Lawton requesting an ETA on the delivery of my goods:

"Mr. Haddix we are undergoing massive changes here at lawton and are currently working on a schedule date and we will be emailing you hopefully sometime this week.

Jackson Rose
General Manager
Lawton Machine
sales@lawtonmachine."

PS: Your barrelled action will be delivered by a flying pig

Re: Flame On, Volume II

First off, sorry you got screwed. You have every right to be pissed. Secondly, I hope that these unfortunate stories serve as a warning to others to stay the heck away from Lawton machine.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

It looks to me like a typical case of guys that just cant handle the situation the main man left them with after he passed away. Something tells me they'll come good though. I can only imagine how it is for them. I think if they see this bad press they'r getting they should try and recover whats been said and come here and make a statement on behalf of the company, although that could open a real can of worms. Either way my money is on them getting it together.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

I was talking to Mr. Lawton about being flown out for an interview in regards to working for him full time before his passing. For the sake of those still at Lawton I'm leaving out the details of the conversations except for the fact that he was looking to bring in somebody that could keep things that are happening now, from happening. Hindsight being 20/20, I see now, that Mr. Lawton saw this coming.

My hope and prayer for them is they come out back on or near the top.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

I can fully understand but let me suggest that if you are going to start over that you talk with Clay Spencer over in Scottsville. Spencer Rifle Barrels - www.spencerriflebarrels.com
(434) 293-6836. He would not be able to help with the lost action and barrel but he can build you what you want and may have another action in stock. His work is beyond belief. He is honest and fair. Just waiting on the ATF to send another project his way.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

I was also ripped of by Bobby Lawton. I sent him money for a 375 CT he had already built, it was for sale here on the hide. I waited over a month for him to send it and he always had an excuse why it hadnt shipped like he did'nt have a case big enough, or he was at a match. I told him to send me the money back if he couldnt get a case that would fit, or just seperate the barelled action and stock like the other one I bought from his dad Barney and ship it. He sold the rifle to someone else and did'nt send me my money back. He has prommised me an action for over a year and a half now and I still dont have it. Now he won't answer his phone or return any calls. I sent him my money in may of 09 and I am waiting on the flying pig delevery also. He is a lieing thief that will screw anyone he gets a chance to, so dont give him the chance, and do business with someone that has a good reputation like Lawton did when Barney was here.

Clay is only about 40 miles from me, and I agree, he is honest and does some of the best, if not the best gunsmithing to be found.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

I was looking at 700 actions before my last buy, and it looks like four or five years ago you would have been nuts not to consider a Lawton. Now you'd be nuts to consider one.

Defiance machine seems to have a pretty good substitute, although I ended up just buying one from Remington...

Re: Flame On, Volume II

Clay does indeed do fine work...and Defiance machine that was suggested makes excellent actions for many top of the heap gunsmiths..GAP, APA, Louisiana Precision Rifles to name some. Sounds like not a good situation. Hope they make it right.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

I've fought with Lawton several times. They are really on a downward spiral. They blame everything on their secretary. I caution everyone to stay away from them. I had to send a rifle back 3 times to get it even close to firing status. The first time it showed up it was covered in rust.

They sent my 375CT to my painter in pieces. He had to assemble it himself.....

Re: Flame On, Volume II

Here is a link to our website in England. We were the UK distributor for lawton, and this is what they did to us.
This had made the owner and his wife, ill with worry, and its a disgusting state of affairs.
Do NOT send these people any money, you will never see it again. Barney must be turning in his grave.
Apparently Lawton have a buyer for the company, i do hope for his sake, that he realises he will legally inherit their debts.

We have never, in 25 years of dealing with the american gun trade, had any problems with anyones honesty.
I,m sorry to bitch on a public forum Lowlight, but people out there need to know what a bunch of thieves these people are.

Re: Flame On, Volume II

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I have heard some crazy stories with Lawton, but DYAM.

Sorry to hear you are out $2,000.00, that plain sucks ass no matter how deep anyone's pocket is.
