Taking the family to Clearwater Beach next month. Our first visit to the sunshine state. Ten days. Figuring on hitting the beach of course, but what other gems within a few hours drive shouldn't we miss?

Would like to see Gators, maybe manatees, do some kayaking or canoeing, snorkeling (?)....maybe an airboat? Glades? Cape Canaveral? NO DISNEY! ?

    Wife, two kids....12 & 6.

    TIA

Gatorland is a couple hours south.
If you want to see wild gators instead, do an airboat ride on Lake Kissimmee, Stick Marsh or the Everglades.

Manatees will be scattered all over the bay area right now. They concentrate in the winter time near power plants and warm water discharge areas. Hard to find in the summer.

You can rent kayaks and paddle boards at Ft DeSoto and paddle around the flats.
The fort is pretty neat and has some big cannons.

Don't go to any beach/ coastal areas from the south end of Anna Maria Island to Captiva Island further south.
The red tide bloom is bad. Lots of fish kills and its hard on the respiratory system and makes your skin itch.

    Use this to track conditions.

    https://mote.org/research/program/environmental-health/beach-conditions-report-red-tide-information

Snorkeling would be great in one of the many fresh water springs like Crystal River, Weekee Watchee or Itchetuckney Springs. You can also kayak, paddle board or canoe these places and it can be a great two for one.
    Hope this helps a bit.

I think Mr. Casselton has given you the inside scoop from a locals standpoint. If you are only looking to avoid Disney, you might want to check out Busch Gardens. They've got some great Rollercoasters, if you're into that kind of thing. Of the times I have been in the area, I couldn't get out of Tampa quick enough. I really liked Clearwater, all the way down to Sannibel/Captiva. But, as Mike said....Red tide is bad (and is bad news).

Cape Canaveral is awesome, but about a 3 hour drive from where you will be. I'm a space junkie from since I was a kid, so I'm biased and the kind of guy who has driven all night just to watch a shuttle launch. Check the launch schedule to see if your trip will coincide with one, they are awesome to watch if you never have. There's tons of wildlife on the Cape, it's a preserve as well, so you can get your nature stuff in there as well. Take the bus tour to the old launch and assembly facilities, worth the $$$, but the museums and spacecraft on display alone are well worth the drive.

Otherwise, your best bet for seeing some manatees and dolphins would be by renting a john boat and cruising the back bays. Winds can be a bitch if you're paddle powered, more so if you're weighted down with kids who aren't helping, so I'd recommend staying close if you're on the water that way. Watch out for the afternoon storms, they spring up quick and pretty much every day and are brutal on the lightning, you definitely don't want to get caught on the water in one. Bring the rods, get a license, and do some fishing if that's your thing, that was always my favorite thing to do when I lived in the state. Good note above about the algae blooms, those can be a bitch.

Other things in the area, Ybor City in downtown Tampa is pretty cool and has great hand rolled cigars, and Rays tickets are always cheap and plentiful for some baseball action, easy to get good infield seats there cheap unless the Red Sox or Yankees are in town, that doubles ticket costs. Busch Gardens is a fun time and less crazy than Disney/Universal. Don Garlits Drag Race museum in Ocala or some of the other Bay area museums, the children's museum is always good for a day in the air conditioning while the kids are still having fun.

Otherwise, enjoy the beach, watch for fossilized shark teeth (found a ton of those when my folks lived down the coast in Venice), don't forget the sunblock, don't let your lady catch you with wandering eyes when the girls in the bikinis are walking past, and remember Florida is full of idiots. I still visit from time to time, I'm as happy to leave every time as I am getting there.

If the kids start acting up, you could always hand them over to @oneshot86 for a day of fun splitting wood in the hot July sun.

    @Redmanss has good advice too.
If you go to Ybor, have a meal at the Columbia restaurant on the corner of 7th Ave and 21st St. The cigar shop just west of there has a huge selection if you partake.
They also sell coffee roasted by Naviera. My favorite is a European espresso roast called Don Carlos. It's bold and strong and sells for $20.00 per kilo.

    29 dollars a kilo???
mikes right, got to see ybor city...
also, try to see the mermaids at crystal river, take the electric boat ride and see the manatees, take your swim trunks and explore the crystal clear water
airboat, lake kissimmee, stupid cool and you will see all the aligators you want...
clearwater is great, you arent going to need to have to go far for any entertainment, clearwater beach, for the most part is all brandnew.
as i think of stuff ill tell you here.

tarpon springs as stated above, you must go to the sponge docks

mikie, i been workin like a cotton picker for the past week,
have you noticed anything with the weather lately,
do you think that right after the heart attack, we could just melt on the ground like a wax candle...
dude, hot just hit numba lebbin, yo

Gatorland already mentioned but some of the other FL classics - Weeki Watchee Springs (mermaids), Silver Springs (glass bottom boats). Homosassa Springs State Park also just up 19 where you can for sure see manatees.

The panhandle is a very long drive and should be reserved for a separate trip all to itself.

    Mike,
That storm we had sure brought the humidity way up.
I took the pooch for a walk at 9:15 this morning and decided to cut it short because of the heat.

I don't envy you out there working in that shit all day long.
    BTW,
Gonna pay mom a visit tomorrow if she's up to it. I'll drop by before heading to mom's and hang with you for a while.

thats great, look foward to it
now i was crying like a baby about how hot it was, and boy howdy, the sun was on, anywho, now, i storm just passed thru, its like it is air conditioned
its beautiful right now, cept the lightning, im afraid of the lightning these days

    Never be afraid of lightning.
Remember, it's safest to climb to the highest point in your area, strip naked and shout at it with your fists in the air. It'll go away...

Or, just do the same thing at the beach like Bogey.

In late Feb early March The Florida Strawberry Festival is pretty cool.

Also The Manatee shooting club has a LD range not too far from Tampa.

    @FS1
Im pretty sure Manatee is only open to 600 yds for the foreseeable future. There is a thread in the link up area and that's been the chatter.
I'm still waiting on JTAC Ranch to open up since it's only 20 minutes from my casa.

I think we will definitely make the trip over to Kennedy space center. There is a launch scheduled for July...maybe we'll get lucky.

I would like to try fishing from the beach, as I've never done anything like that. I'll have to look into non-resident license fees and see about equipment...only ever done fresh water fishing here in Ohio.

We did Discovery Cove Orlando with the kids.

Kind of pricey but included food and alcohol. I wouldnt recommend getting wrecked there but you easily could especially under that sun.

We were in the "lagoons" all day snorkeling with the animals.

Our appointment to swim with the dolphins was late in the day and the kids loved it.

Again pricey but one of the things everyone in the family enjoyed.

Kids need to be water capable to really fully experience it.

Okay just looked at a map.

Lots of history where you are.

Go to Dunedin and see where the USMC trained its trac crews in AAVs for the Pacific. Amazing story of amphib tractors, Roebling and being able to forecast the future and it all begins small right there. Who thought a food machine manufacturer would become an AAV powerhouse. The HQ of the trac training battalion is still there a low Spanish style stucco building painted that pink hue found often down there. I think its a convent or something like that now. Cant imagine how busy it was in WWII and how many guys left there never to come back.

We stayed at the Don Cesar when down there. Beach is awesome but it is a little unnerving the amount of wildlife that swims with you. Schools of rays leave you wondering friend or foe. Saw a manatee off the beach, my daughter enjoyed seeing dolphins from our rental kayak, I thought it better not to tell her dolphin flukes are horizontal not vertical.

Don Cesar was a longtime VA hospital for vets coming home from WWII particularly PTSD AAF crews. VA gave it up in the 70s.

Found the food to kind of suck down there. One street in St Pete near the marina had some good restaurants.

    Bring binos for beach watching

A day's charter in the bay is not expensive. IMHO, it's more fun than going out, especially for kids. That's something you'll need to set up in advance if you decide to try it.
    I completely agree with this.

Charters for offshore are great, provide everything you need (sometimes even beer is included), get on a boat for a while, lots of fun. Individual charters are very pricy, the group boats are crowded but cheap, pick your poison but both will bring you fish and fun.

Rig wise if you go it alone in the bays, so long as you have a rod/reel that can handle 12lbs test or more you're good, or a cheap rod/reel combo is easily had at Wally World for under $40 that will last you the vacation, just be sure to give it a good rinse in the shower afterwards to get the salt off. If you go out on your own in a boat, run some good braided line on the reel, go 40lbs and good hardware on your leader, throw a Rat-L-Trap or Bomber lure in chrome and red/black near some structure or watch for swirls in the flats and you'll get something, Jack or Snook are the funnest fish I've ever caught in my life. Alternatives are free lining a live shrimp while drifting or cut squid on the bottom, that will bring the Redfish or small sharks, both delicious eating, or a ray that are great fights. Let the drag sing to you and wear them out, it's not like freshwater where you can easily crank them in but it's more addictive than crack when you land a nice fish after a good fight. Licenses for non-resident are cheap, $30 for a 7-day or $17 for a 3-day, it's snook season on the Gulf so that requires a $10 permit if you want to keep them.

Surf fishing is very hit or miss, I never learned it enough to be successful. Fishing piers are a great time too, run near or on the bottom with live or cut bait, watch out for pelicans when you cast because they will go after your bait and it's a serious pain in the ass if you hook one, they're protected birds. Careful if you catch a saltwater catfish, they're worthless to eat and their dorsal and pectoral fins will stab right into your hand if you let them. I hate those things, never turned one back into the water alive.

Fishing is the only thing I miss from that state.

Redmanss gives good advice on fishing opportunities near Clearwater. I can't help you much with surf fishing advice, as I mainly fish the marshes and shallows of the Gulf. Using the tackle he listed, you should be able to catch something either wading or kayaking around the flats/mangroves (redfish, trout, snook, jacks, etc.). A charter on the flats or offshore would be a lot of fun, and you'd probably have better success with a guide's knowledge (and fast, comfortable boat).

If you are looking to get into the water, consider snorkeling for bay scallops on the shallow grass flats a little further north in the "Big Bend" area. It's like an Easter egg hunt in an aquarium. It's easy and enjoyable for kids and adults alike, as you are usually in 6 feet of water or less, and a mess of scallops makes a pretty tasty meal. All you need is a mask, snorkel, fins, and a mesh bag to put the scallops in. You usually see all sorts of critters too. You could either rent a boat and go out, or you could book a charter to take you out. If you go that route, check out Homosassa, Crystal River, or Steinhatchee. Just be on the lookout for idiots on the water. Some folks have no business operating a boat, and there are a good number who don't have any regard for boating etiquette or general common sense (especially the part about running close to a boat with a dive flag up).

If you are up that way, consider checking out some of the many natural springs and spring runs. They are fun to snorkel and canoe as well, and they are a great way to beat the summer heat. Paynes Prairie State Preserve outside of Gainesville is also a pretty neat state park, and your chances are high of seeing wildlife (wild horses, bison, and lots of big gators among other critters).

As was mentioned before, If the Panhandle sounds appealing, save it for another trip when you have more time. It's a different culture up there. I like it better myself. They say that the farther north you go in Florida (geographically speaking), the farther south you get (culturally speaking). Have fun!

If your into art, there is the Salvador Dali museum in Clearwater. Cheesecake Factory restaurant at the Tampa International mall. Good food and of course, cheese cake!! Jackson’s Bistro in Ybor is great. Turns into a high end nightclub after 11:00pm. Lettuce lake park on the south side of Tampa is nice if you want to hike around some and has lots of shade. There’s a lookout tower you can climb. Hillsborough River Park is over there too. You can swim and rent canoes. If you like mountain biking, Alafia state park just east of Tampa has pretty good trails. AJ’s bikes is on site so you can do rentals.

Word of warning for visiting Fl. Any body of water can have gators. Leave them alone and they usually leave you alone, but always be mindful. 12’ gator can hide in as little as 18” of water. Despite how they look, they are fast!! They can sprint up to 20mph on land for short distances.

If you do anything nature parkish, keep a eye out for water moccasins/cotton mouths. Usually you only run into them around dusk. They tend to hide during the day.

For outdoor activities bring bug spray. Mosquitoes, deer flys and yellow flys are in full affect this time of year for the next four months.

    David.

Payne’s Prairie is more like Payne’s wetlands now. Haven’t seen the wild horses or bison in two separate trips now. Was there last weekend after visiting my parents in Gainesville. If you do go to Payne’s, on state road 441 north bound about half way up is a parking spot with a long t dock. It’s usually pretty easy to see gators there. Bivens Arm nature park is on the north side of Payne’s. You can hike about two miles into the preserve. High chance of gators on the trail.

for your familys sake, keep this in mind...

you have so much pointed out to do, and believe me, they are all awesome, really.
but, youre on vacation and you dont want to burn up vacation time on the road...

    story time.

my x-wifes family did family reunions every 3 years, and our side of the family had our turn, anywhere in the country and the rest of the family would follow...x-wifes mom chose here, indian rocks beach, specifically, and under my breath i talked shit about it...
but let me tell you, sitting my ass in that 86 degree water day in and day out was 100 percent what the dr ordered.
    it was great, really great...

dont feel bad if you dont leave the island, take it slow, enjoy

There's a pretty badass, hole in the wall, BBQ joint in Ybor too!!! It's kind of behind Gaspars grotto. All kinds of good places to eat there. Couple of fresh hand rolled cigars are a pretty good end to a day there.

Snook and redfish on the beach.

Open water, so ten to twenty pound braid works just fine.
20-30# flourocarbon leader at least three feet long.
Snook have a very sharp gill plate, but you can lip them and reds like bass.
3-5" paddle tails or split tail with jig head or 5-0 hook.
Lighter colors like pearl, silver gray or even clear with metal flakes.
Walk the beach at sunrise with light colored polarized lenses.
Cast parallel to the shore line in the trough, which is the shore line to the sand bar.
Look into the rollers and you can actually see the fish through the face (vertical part) of the waves.

Catch fish until the walkers show up and screw up the fishing.
