I have a barrel living on borrowed time, gonna replace it here pretty soon. It has aggressive helical fluting(thanks again to Kampfeld) and I'm concerned about it slipping or chewing up my blocks. Is there anything yall do to guard against it or should I be ok?

Re: Flutes in a barrel vise

I had the same concern, and the barrel did slip but there was no damage to the the vise. There was however, damage to the coating on the barrel. Which, in my opinion was worse. I found that I make sure the barrel flute land is straight up in the vise, and the vise is firmly snugged up, it won't slip.
