I have started to collect parts for a 7 WSM build. I plan to do this using a M70 style action. Are there differences between the FN-SPR action and a 2011 M70 action?

Searches on SH mention appear to show that the FN-SPR action is somewhat different, but I am not clear on what they actually are. Any recommendations?

If you can find one, I'd get the SPR action. Winchester recently changed the trigger on their M70 actions to the MOA trigger. The SPRs use the old Winny trigger, which is fantastic. You can't add the old triggers to the new actions.

Other than that, the SPR actions are CRF Win 70 actions.

Thanks for the quick reply. Would a WSM action be the only reasonable choice/too difficult to change a 308 to WSM?

The WSM action would save you a bit of work if going with a WSM build. Look around and you can find the FN PBR XP actions in 300 WSM. I used a fresh PBR XP .308 action for my latest build (.308) and couldn't be happier. Virtually the same as the SPR action, just says PBR on the reciever. I compared it to a collegues SPR and they are identical.

I did not find any M70 actions on GB or any SPR style either. I will be using this in wet climates, such as British Columbia, so perhaps buying a Win. Extreme Weather would be the best way to start.

Too bad about not being able to retrofit the original trigger. Not sure if it would be best to find a M70 built in New Haven, and use the old design trigger.

That was a good link, he has the same goal. Thanks for the help.

here is model 70 7wsm, along the lines of what you mentioned.

Think about how you want to set up your magazine. The drop floor plate internal mag feeds great, and allows a bit longer seating as well. However, it does not top feed. Maybe this is just the way the barrel was cut, so discuss with your gunsmith...

I can also recommend an oversize bolt knob. I got mine from AZ precision and then had it installed by Mark at Short Action Customs. He's one of the few setup for the winchester action.

For what it is worth with regards to the new MOA trigger in the Win action, I really like the feel of it. A shooting buddy just picked up a new stainless weather model in 7mm-08 and the feel of the trigger is very good. No creep, clean break, very crisp. It is much better than Remington triggers of any era. It also has a nice wide shoe, somewhat similar to the Timney triggers.

This thread has been most interesting. Glad to see that Mark at SAC works on Winchesters. I am probably going to go with a donor rifle in stainless, and work with the MOA trigger as needed.

I have the McM stock on order, and the barrel as well. Now I just have to wait a few months...

I've got a PBR that I've been seriously debating turnig into a hunting rifle and the 7wsm is on the short list of calibers it would be in.

Re: FN-SPR or M70 for donor rifle, 7 WSM build

Didn't winchester change the thread pitch on the tenon for the WSM guns because the standard one was stretching? So, that would be another reason to start with a WSM donor. Good luck.

I would be surprised to hear that. My gunsmith tells me that the Winchester action is harder than a whores heart.
