Was wondering if anyone had hands on experience with FN's bolt action rifles, I'm not very experienced with bolt action rifles. Was wondering what people heard/have experienced with them. I love FN's 5.7 and .45 cal pistol and the SCAR's just seem natural transitioning from mr m4 into it. Just wondering if their bolt action were as good as their other products.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I have a PBR, and it is a good shooter. Two of my friends have an FNAR and an SPR...both are real nice. The only thing I don't like about my FN is the lack of aftermarket parts. Every shadetree operation in the world has something for the rem700, but there's not a lot out there for the FN/Win 70. Don't get me wrong, you can get McMillan stocks and good replacement barrels, and good triggers, but all these are too expensive for me. Just trying to find mid priced stuff is hard.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I wish i could afford a AI rifle but DoD pays me... need i say more?

It's hard for alot of companies to even improve a FN. Took my 5.7 and FNP .45 to my gunsmith and said "what can you do for me" the retort was "nothing short of telling you to buy a new FN" I kinda wish i could find a little better trigger for the 5.7 but i am just picky lol

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I have a SPR-A2 and it shoots great. I upgraded the trigger to a jewell. Factory trigger was fine I just like light trigger pulls. Now when I go to the range with the wife I cant get to shoot it anymore. After she toastes the barrel I'll have my smith install a 26" tube with a break for her.
Very good rifles for the money considering it also comes with a scope mount installed.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

Great rifles. I have an A5M with a 20"bbl and have been in love ever since I first took it to the range. Solid as a rock and built with tons of added options like flush cups and a scope base. If you do your part, the FN bolt guns will definitely do theirs.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I've got a TSR in .308 and its a fantastic rifle. The scope mount was factory installed and works well. The action is very smooth and my only complaint is the trigger being a bit heavy. I've gotten used to it though and the rifle shoots great. The only real problem I have with FN is that they bailed out on the 20" smooth barreled version I ordered and went to the longer fluted barrel. I need to thread for a supressor and the flutes really screw up the 2 point mounting setup. Oh well....if thats the worst than its still great.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I bought an SPR A1 back in 2003, right around the time FN released the second generation. Fantastic rifle, especially for the money. At that time I picked it up for just over $1k. One of the nicest things about that rifle is it shot a wide variety of handloads, and commerical ammo, very acccurately.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

loved my SPR, just as accurate to 600 as some of the customs I have shot. my only knocks are the 4 round mags are a pain for competition shooting and that barrel is massive and heavy

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

doesn't get much better in terms of factory actions, controlled round feed, claw extractor, fixed ejector, 20moa base, great adjustable trigger, integral recoil lug, oh and don't forget 3 position safety.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I've got the A3G which is bedded and its capable of great accuracy when its driven right. The trigger is fine but the pull is pretty heavy for this type of rifle, at some point I'll have it adjusted but right now I'm taking it as a challenge to improve my shooting with the heavier pull (north of 5lbs). Having an accurate chrome lined barrel is a good thing. The saddle cheek piece isn't my idea of the best approach. One of threaded inserts gave up the ghost shortly after I got it and I've just gone with an eagle stock pack. Feeding is so so and I plan to have an AICS system installed which should take care of any feeding issues. Its put them into the .3's on occasion and I'm sure it could do it a lot more often if I was up to it.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I bought an A1-SPR off a member here 3-4 years ago and love it, but I am a big Mod 70 fan. Shoots great and loves the Lapua 155's. I don't care for the 4rd mag, but I hope to replace it with CDI bottom metal soon.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

Maybe you guys don't mind if I jump in with a question, hopefully it won't completely jack the thread.

A co-worker of mine is selling a FN SPR but I'm not sure what generation it is. Its got a McM stock, a non-fluted barrel, and a pictinny base. Does this make it a 2nd Gen? If so what is it worth in really good shape?

Thanks.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

For me, worth depends on whether it was bedded or not, bedding adds to the value. I'd guess it's an earlier model since its not fluted, not sure if these were all bedded or some were put out without that option as they do with the current generation. I've heard some of the earlier models had great barrels. I'd want to know how many rounds have gone down the barrel and how the rifle had been taken care of, also how's it shoot etc. Given all that I'd compare to the price of the current rifles and go from there.

which mcmillan? is the barrel chrome lined? without those 2 questions answered their is no way of knowing which gen.

sidenote i am building a custom 308 on fn spr action with manner t4 carbon if you are looking for something like a spr plus i am local and you can handle it before purchasing if interested.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

Diggler,

I've shot my co-workers FN and it shoots better than anything I've got. The stock appears to be a non adjustable Mcm A5. I have no clue on how to tell if a barrel is crome lined or not.

Are you saying that you're planning on selling the custom FN you're building?

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I bought a Gen -1 FN SPR. The difference is that they came with a 26" barrel in an HS Precision Stock not McMillan. Anything in a McMillan is gen 2. The gun shoots 3/4" at 200 yards w/ 168gr FGMM and better than that w/BH 175gr match ammo.

The 4-round double stack factory DBM did not feed that well so I replaced with Bottom metal from CDI to use the AI mags - worked great - great gun.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I have had two SPR A3G's. The first one wouldn't group well, and after blaming the ammo, scope, shooter, rings, bases, and anything else you can think of, FN admitted that they had a few with bad barrels, and mine was one of them. I waited nearly a year for the replacement, but that was OK because FN gave me a Leupold Mark 4 scope to say "sorry for the wait".

The second A3G was wonderfully accurate, but wouldn't feed the rounds off the left side of the magazine. They would jam into the breech face of where the barrel and receiver meet. I sent the rifle to FN 3 or 4 times for them to try and repair it.

As they couldn't repair it, they agree to replace it. I waited nearly a year (AGAIN), and they never were able to get me a replacement rifle. I ended up with an FNAR, and an FS2000 because they simply couldn't produce a replacement rifle. I have no idea if FN ever got the SPR A3G line of rifles back up.

My experience with FN has been anything other than satisfying. If it weren't for Bob Ailes' great communication and assistance I probably would have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, for whatever that would have been worth.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I run an FN A5-M SPR in 308 with the DBM.
It is a 1/4 MOA gun and has served me well.
I've been using it in competition for over four years now and it has yet to let me down.

Best thing you can do with a new SPR is to have it bedded and get the CDI bottom metal installed.
Bedding makes a huge difference and the current factory box magazines leave alot to be desired.

I run an FN SPR. But I am by no means a rifle guy. Still getting used to it. I would love to see some pics of your rig and even have some load data if you would be so kind. All I am running right now is FGM 168. PM me if you want my e-mail.

Greyson

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

The load I use is:

Brass: Lake City LR
Primer: Federal 210M
Powder: 44.3 grains of Alliant Reloader 15
Bullet: 175 grain SMK using .02" neck tension

I'll post up some PIC when I can.

Prior to Moly Resin coating the metal FDE and dipping the stock & optic in Crye Multicam, it pretty much looked like this:

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I have the Gen-1 FN SPR with a 26" barrel, HS Precision stock and Jewell trigger which came with the rifle from the factory. I haven't shot it all that much but I just got home from the range and here are the groups I shot with various factory and military loads.

They are great rifles if you're not going the custom rifle route.

Re: FN SPR/TSR experience?

I was lucky enough to shoot a few weeks ago at ASC with the FN SPRA5 and the rifle was a hammer. The new DBM system seems pretty sweet and it is a drop in replacement for the current mag system. If I were in the market for a new rifle I would definitely look at a SPR.
