Fort Worth Area Pile Up

This section of highway is elevated. That combined with it being dark outside (first accident reported at about 0615) and the preceding roadway being dry, was a huge factor here. Another issue was that there are barricades on the side of the roadway, drivers were unable to escape the area.
A terrible morning for sure, but after watching the videos I’m surprised “only” six people died. The Police, Fire, and EMS personal did a great job.
 
I don't know if ya'll know, but for those who run the risk of 'frozen water lines'.... one thing you CAN do is simply leave the 'furthest faucet' on, on a very slow trickle.

That's the very first thing that is done here, after lines get thawed. DON'T turn it off until the the cold has passed. Our lines here are underground, and there are areas in this city where they weren't buried deep enough (older developments) and this is what they have to do. Each year.
I always put one of these under the cover when I have to cover my outside faucets. 18 hours of heat will help to keep your faucets from freezing.

We have the same problem in Arkansas, as a neighboring state I'm sure that's not a surprise.

I live up on the NW border of the state where it meets Missouri. A good 15+ years ago Missouri started treating their roads with beet juice. You would literally see I-40 go from a solid sheet of ice to completely clear right at the Missouri border. For years Arkansans complained about our horrendous road treatments and horrible performance by city/state/county departments that were literally bleeding tens of millions... until they eventually relented, for whatever political reason I do not recall, and started following Missouri's example.

Now when this happens our interstate up here is completely clear -- busy roads, completely clear. They're wet, because they're covered in beet juice, but they are completely clear.

Somewhere in Texas there's a politician who's in charge of that budget that doesn't want to spend the money. If you want things to change, find that politician and make them as famous as they've always wanted to be. I'll bet y'all have beet juice trucks running all the busy roads by next year.

No idea what you do about shit like that insane truck driver who looked to be going full speed when he obliterated several cars, no doubt at least a few of the 5 deaths (my guess is likely all of them) resulted from that impact alone. That was insane.

This small expenditure can save you CUBIC DOLLARS in repair bills and 'personal replacement values'. (whatever-in-Hell the term is, for items destroyed by water damage inside the home)
 
Have you ever driven in Dallas? Frikkin 80 miles per hour will get your ass run over in that city. They don't slow down for shit.

Wouldn't disagree. Did seem like he was going faster than other trucks seen in the video. The impact was insane, it looked like it squirted the frame of a stripped vehicle out.

Mad respect to those drivers who clearly tried to run off the bridge to avoid being a missile; says a lot about a person who's first reaction is to sacrifice themselves.

What's crazy is, I live in Louisiana, just 10 miles from the Texas line. They come over here to work, and that's fine, no problem with that, but they drive sooo frikkin slow over here. They drive slow in the fast lane on the interstate and refuse to move over. If I see slow traffic ahead, I can just about guarantee you that it's a Texas license plat on the vehicle causing the bottleneck. Used to be that Texans were some of the most courteous drivers on the planet. If they saw you coming up behind them, they'd just about hit the ditch to get out of your way and let you pass. Not any more.

It’s all the people that move there that don’t know how to drive.. Now that I’m in Alaska I can tell in winter the cars that contain snowbirds

Well more like tried to get over as far as they could. That area was the center express lane with concrete dividers on both sides, with highway on either side. So they were sandwiched in the middle some more pics

And as for 'winter driving' and the drivers themselves.... the very first problem is the fallacy of "all-season tires"... what a joke. First off, people think that the label 'all season' means that they're "perfect for everything" where-in-fact what it going on is you have a tire that is (at best) 50% effective in dry conditions, and 50% effective in ice conditions.

And that's only when the tire is brand-new. As soon as you start driving on it, those numbers are going DOWN. A full 'Winter tire' is what is needed in 'Winter conditions'. Simple as that.

I've been saying this for decades. They made it law here, about 3 years ago.

A person can have a 4-wheel-drive Ferrari. It don't matter how many bazillions one spends on their vehicle. The ONLY thing connecting that vehicle to the ground, is the tires. With shit tires, you get shit performance.

Next, is driver's ability. That's a whole nother topic, right there.

On a different note, back in '94 I got pulled over by our Northern Federale's. He was in 'oncoming lane' and after flashing his lights pulled right across the street and parked in front of me, "nose-to-nose" so to speak. I got out and met him at the front bumper, just the same as he did. He asked "Do you have any idea as to why I pulled you over?" My reply was:

"Well,,, going side-ways through that last intersection probably has something to do with it....." ;)

And then he stated "why don't you tell me a bit more about that."

After a bit more explanation, I left there with a seat-belt ticket, and that was all.
“All Season” means spring, summer, fall, and night.

On the modern side, if you run something like Waze, you can report traffic incidents and such & if anyone is paying attention, they can see it.
 
I had a part-time job in Limon, CO when I was 16 and in High School 1964, helping run a wrecker, then the Army and Motorsicle racin, then several years running a wrecker again before I started working for Colo. Highway Dept, later CDOT, for 30 years so I have spent a bit of time out on our Highways.
My job with CDOT was as a mechanic and weldor but my ass is no stranger to the seat of a snowplow when they needed an ass for every seat so I have lots of time running a snowplow.

Limon, Colorado is where the Earth gets an enema as to bad winter conditions on the roads in E. Colorado.

I have seen and been involved in more nasty shit on the roads than most can imagine, hair, teeth,eyeballs and cremains, scattered everywhere, and worked out of Limon, Castle Rock[pop.[750] at that time, and Sterling, Colorado.

I once spent 2 nights and a day and a half with a family of 5 crammed into the cab of my wrecker on Cedar Point NW of Limon where I tied a rope to the truck that everyone had to keep in hand when they went out to piss or shit because there was no visablity, not even 3 feet. They had rolled their car and I was sent to go get them in less than favorable conditions then it got worse and there we were.
We used every bit of the food and water I had on board in my personal stash, I started out with full fuel tanks so we stayed warm but it sure as fuck was crowded in that cab. I am still friends with that family and we talk several times a year but the kids from that time are older now and they think it was a great adventure. I did have radio commo back to base so no rescues were involved.

When I first started driving the wrecker, as to snow and ice conditions, my boss, Rich, showed me an egg shell and told me to put it between the fuel pedal and my foot and never break it. Be smart, go slow, and you will get done what you need to do.

I took that lesson to be what he was trying to tell me. You may be slow, but you will get there. If you slide out or go too fast you won't get there to do the job you were sent to do

I never stuck a wrecker or a snowplow in that time, but did recover a few to include welding a fucked up wheel to a fucked up hub and send them back to the barn.

I remember the CSP Lt. telling me there would never be a ticket for me for speeding, wrecker governed out at 85 MPH, but if I put it in the ditch going too fast for something, someplace, and didn't show up to do what they needed done, he would crucify my ass. Lesson was correct and I learnd it.

For all of you ice drivers, Remember that egg shell, it will treat you right. FM RIP Rich, you taught me a lot.

Tell your cops to quit pulling Texans over and giving them tickets for going the speed limit and they'll speed up. Fix your fucken roads to. You can't expect somebody in a Honda Civic to drive at speed on a road that's clearly intended for four-wheel drive... LOL

Well the guy that was in that FJ cruiser that just about every one thought would have been 100% dead is alive and well. Dude was a medic, got out of the wrecked car and started helping others.
