I already have a XD.45 full size and a compact 1911. I have the opportunity to get a full size 1911 or another XD.45. If I get the full size 1911, I can then let the wife use my xd. If I get the xd then once again my wife will have a xd and so will I. I guess my question is high cap vs single stack? I'm not an operator, but want a plan if the need arises. So in all my rambling I want my wife and myself to have a full size .45acp. Should we both have the same type weapon so that the mags interchange or should I get the 1911?

I own both. Go with the XD45 Compact (not Sub-Compact) if you go the XD route. It will take 10rnd and 13rnd mags and is very close to the same size as a Glock19.
The XD45 Compact carries real well for concealed applications since the grip is shorter. You can then carry extra 13rnd mags for reloads.
