I posted this over on ARFCOM figured it would fit well here also....
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I have 5.5mil garand that the barrel is toast on. Anyway I was going to send it out for a new tube but figured it would make a good DIY project. Anyway the rest of the gun outside is in excellent shape but the barrel inside looks like a dirt road. I was surfing Numrich for something else and noticed they had Springer barrels for $75 and figured what the hell its worth a shot. Well today my package arrived at my FIL's house and he called me while inspecting it. First thing he asked is the thing counterbored as the first 1/2" of the muzzle end looks like it has no rifling. Then he bust out a cleaning rod, brush, and patch to see what the bore looks like. He said its pretty shiny but it does have a couple of pitted spots. Its in better shape than my current tube but I was hoping the "fair" description to be closer to being par. BTW barrel is stamped something like SA 1-43 or something like that, he is supposed to send me some pics.
While on the phone with him I get an email about midway clearances, guess whats on it! FUCKIN Criterion 30-06 barrel $209.00, 30-06 Pull Through Reamer, $142 shipped..... So figured WTF already ordered the tools to do the barrel swap so lets get knuckles deep...
Lets go over it,
$550 for the garand, Thought it was a good deal at the time.....
$75 for the barrel that I most likely won't use.....
Criterion Barrel, $219 shipped
Pull Through Reamer, $142 shipped
Brownells Tools (barrel vice, action wrench, HS guage set, BO Timing Guages, Misc other items) $325 shipped
So I am over $1300 into this little jewell so far. I don't remember Shuff's Quote for a rebarrel using a USGI tube but I don't recall it being that much.
I guess the bright side is I was needing the barrel vice and action wrench anyway since I want to build my own Rem 700, throw a few more bones in and will be able to get the proper bushing and heads for it. The reamer will be a 1 time use thing but I suppose it will fit into my collection of never used reamers. Numrich said I could return the barrel without much issue.
Also on a side note, if anyone in DFW needs to put a new tube on their Garand I have the tools in house to do it.
Will be back from Afghan sooner or later
