Back in BHam!!!
My wife is buying me a Spikes upper for Christmas this year. I have a lower, and a can for it already. I plan on playing with it for a couple of years until my daughter gets old enough, then it will be hers.

Wondering if I should run a mid length forearm on it where just of the tip of the barrel sticks out and the can hangs off the end, or run a rifle length forearm on it that shrouds the first 3" of the can?

Hmmmmm.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

I would SBR the lower, run a 5.5 inch barrel with a Spectre length handguard on it and the can as well. It will give it that SD look and you can run standard velocity ammo instead of subsonics and it should stay subsonic with just a 5.5 inch barrel. Also with the can on it, it will give the extra back pressure needed to get it to cycle reliably with the shorter barrel.

Atleast thats what my plan is.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

Can't have SBR in Bama. I'm thinking the rifle length would look good. I might take the can off and screw it on a P22 or something, but I will always shoot the AR with the can.

I thought it would be good protection for the cheapy aluminum can too...

Now, which forearm to go with...."

I think you should wait about a month before choosing what you want. there might be some new kick ass parts that someone might be working on for them....hint hint hint...

Cant say more

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

The longer rail definitely looks better. I had a Spike's SD upper w/ fake can and it looked great. The only bad part about doing an SD type setup is that not many rails have a large enough I.D. to accommodate a can and IMO the YHM rails are ugly not mention heavy.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

I have been looking at a Spikes and wondering almost the same thing. I'm thinking of doing a Troy rifle length forearm with the 16" LW barrel up-grade.

Post some pics when your is done please, ans let us know how it shoots and what you did to it for furniture.

Thanks,

Tman

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

You must be talking about a fake can? Rifle length with a standard 16" bbl, has the end of the bbl sticking out about 3". With the .22lr dedicated uppers, that should roughly look like a 14.5" so you still will be running about .5" past the end of the rail.

If you ever have any reliability issues. Look into the JP Low mass hammer. Don't run a notched hammer at all. DPMS and CMMG have no notch hammers.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

I don't know Sal, the guy at Spike's said that the mid length YHM rail was 9.2" and left the threaded part of the barrel just barely sticking out. My can is 5.5", so I figured the 12.5" rifle length forearm would roughly cover half the can.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

hey Jason, just to give you a rough idea. The pictures i sent you of my SBR were a 10.25 inch barrel and YHM Spectre length rails, i believe they were like 9.4 or something like that

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

Like some of the other guys have stated on a standard Spikes conversion, You get a 16" barrell, but it is recessed in side the receiver about 1.5" that leaves the 14.5" barrel profile sticking out.

I added a troy MRF 10" rail that leaves 4.5" sticking out past the rail. Then added their 5" slip on Can that recesses about 1.5 " under the rail. I hope this helps.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

I have a few thousand rounds threw my spikes. I have the older spikes/ceiner conversion. I have no issues but run it wet like I was instructed. I would not hesitate to buy one and from what I have heard the newer Spikes is the best conversion you can buy.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

Over on ARFcom, it appears that only the really short barrels, like under 5" provide a significant challenge in tuning. Most longer barrels run fine with little or no tuning(basically trying different springs, both recoil and hammer).
I have 2 Cieners and a Spike's, as well as an M-261, all in dedicated uppers from 16-20". All run well. Semiauto, I don't have a FA lower. Suppressors generally help reliability with shorter barrels.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

Mine originally came with a Spectre Length Rail and Fake can, however it was way too heavy for my liking with the YHM Rail. I'm considering adding the Mid Length Troy TRX Rail to mine to replace the M4 HG's which should cover some of the fake can. Congrats on getting your Spikes....you're gonna love it!!!

Am I too newb here to understand this?

Should I be vaguely offended?

What am I missing? That perhaps the average ARFcommer may have an loose definition of accuracy, and may be more concerned with volume than precision?

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

I recommend the LW barrel option for accuracy, it may be a $100 option but mine shoots just as good as most heavy barrel 10/22's, that is if you are looking for accuracy but if you just want a plinker then go for the cheaper barrel.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

+1 on the LW barrel! I can't speak for their standard barrel but I can for the Walther. It shoots great. I've had a little ejection problems, but I only have about 100 rounds through it:) My Timney trigger doesn't like it but the standard DPMS does just fine. I haven't had time to look into fixing the Timney problem yet.

I'll look into that. What ammo does your like? I just picked up a bunch of Fed plated value pack from Wal Mart.

It's getting a can built by a local guy.

Re: Getting a Spike's .22lr upper!

Mine likes pretty much everything as far as feeding goes. for accuracy the fed bulk pack is hard to beat in this gun! I haven't used any match ammo in it though since it is a 22LR I don't see the point in spending the same amount on LR amm as I am spending on 22WMR or .223
