Hello all I am new to this forum and new to long range shooting. I am an infantry officer in the Marine Corps and a die hard bowhunter and love shooting rifles, mainly close range or rimfires. I have limited knowledge on long range shooting to include commercially available optics. I am about to order a Sig SSG3000 and i am debating what glass I should get. The purpose of the rifle will be recreational shooting and hunting. I will not be shooting farther than 600M as I do not have a range that supports anything farther than that. The glass I am looking at is Burris C4 plus 4-16 or the Vortex hs 4-16. I was wondering if anyone on here as any experience with these optics as I have never owned or used a Vortex scope but own 1 Burris and i am very happy with it.
No i cannot afford a Nightforce or a $2000 Leupold. I want to keep the scope at about $500 give or take a little wiggle room. I do have the Mil discount with leupold but im not convinced they are the best for what i can afford.
Thanks in advance for all of your opinions
Matt

I have heard rumors the Vortex offers mil/le discounts yet i cant seem to find where. Does anyone know where this is offered? I am already on promotive but have not seen Vortex on the site.
thanks for all your help the SWFA does not look bad at all.

So after some thought i have narrowed my selection down to Vortex. I am curious as to if there is much of a difference between the HS-T series and PST series and is the difference in cost really worth it?

I know you are pretty set on the vortex, but I think you should also check out the new Burris XTRII scopes, Weaver 3-15 EMDR and the Sightron offerings. Burris and Sightron offer very good .mil discounts, not sure about weaver.

I am running a Sightron S Tac 2.5-17.5 scope. It is not perfect but it is an excellent value. I had tracking issues initially that were addressed quickly by Sightron. It has since been tracking very well and is repeatable and reliable. The glass is good, the power range excellent. When you factor in your discount, it will be almost impossible to beat.
Feel free to PM me for details.

Main differences are reticle choice and illumination. The HS-T is a great (hard to beat) value for the mid $500 price point. It is second focal plane, and depending on your shooting type and preference, that may be fine. For a little more, the SS 3-15x mentioned offers an excellent setup with FFP. The Sightron and Weaver mentioned above are great choices too.

Another to check out is the Burris Mtac line. They have tactical type mil/mil turrets with screw on covers that are really nice when hunting. I've bumped turrets before on a hunt.... and it blows.

P.S., nice Sig rifle, those are badass.

hunting/rec shooting 600 and less - with your .mil discount a VX3 leupold with CDS would be hard to beat. You might even be able to get into a Mark 4.

I'm curious about the new Veracity line of hunting scopes from Burris. The power range is similar to their new XTR II tactical line, but all the Veracitys are on 30mm tubes. Guess they're as much of an unknown quantity as the XTR IIs, since they were announced about the same time, but they are FFP, and do come with reticles that look to be useful. No idea how SWFA compares on price to any of the other vendors, but here's a link: SWFA Riflescopes Burris Rifle Scopes Burris Veracity Rifle Scopes

OTOH, I've got a couple of Vortex Viper PST sfp 6-24x50s, along with several Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LRMOAs - they're about $300 above the range you listed, but are probably worth it. If you could find a vendor that gives a substantial active mil discount, I still think the new Burris Veracity line shouldn't be overlooked.
