I chambered up a 300 Win mag for a buddy a couple day ago. Screwed it all together and started break in with some factory ammo. I had a pretty bad ring on the case, never had one before. It was not ejecting cases, so I decided I would fix it. Stuck it back in the lathe and set it back.080 thinking it would clear it up. Screwed it back together, shot a few handloads at my 800 yard target, 1/2 MOA for 5 shots. then I noticed that there is stil a pretty bad line on the case. With once fired brass it is hanging cases again. Set it back more? Sand the chamber?

How about some high res close ups of the brass? Much easier to diagnose that way.

Also, what method are you using to indicate the barrel for your chambering work?

I get it close with a range rod then go into the throat with a long intripd indicator. Yea right hi res close ups, my camera skills suck. You can barely feel the ridge left on the brass. I have had cosmetic lines in chambers before but never one bad enough to hang cases. I would guess that the ridge left on the brass is less than .001 per side.

Understand that sanding increases the id of the chamber. If at all possible keep setting the barrel back till it goes away.

Chip weld creates rings. A little spec is all it takes. Bugger work hardens and makes the mess. Inspect your tooling carefully. Dragging a penny over the cutting edge is a good trick. The copper won't hurt it and it'll grab the chip and break it free. A little elbow grease will tune you up. Check the edge under magnification. A fingernail will also tell you if you got rid of it.

Use that oil liberally!.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip on the penny, never heard that one before. I think setting it back is the way to go, now that I consider it.
