<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Five lawmakers in South Dakota are pushing legislation that would require adults in the state to buy a gun starting in 2012.

This is great news for gun makers like Smith & Wesson (SWHC) and Sturm Ruger (RGR), both of which have seen shares fall since early December. The bill doesn't say what kind of gun people would be required to buy. It suggests only that residents look for something "suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and personal preference."

There's no chance of this proposal actually becoming law. And the politicians who introduced the bill know it. But they're trying to make a point by comparing the bill to . . . federal health care reform?

"Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not," one of the bill's sponsors, a Republican from Sioux Falls, told the Argus Leader. "But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance."</div></div>

Wouldn't it be nice though? or would it!

Re: Gun Mandating Law

I'd be happier to see legislation passed requiring everyone over 18 and not legitimately disabled to purchase their own food, clothing and shelter.

What am I thinking? That would be insane.

Re: Gun Mandating Law

we also have a bill making welfare recipients required to take grug tests for booze and illegal drugs but from last i heard that is dead in the water. Opponets said that the welfare people are no more likely to use either than regular working people. What are they scared of then? maybe they know the truth that a bunch of the shit bags would be out of welfare and have to get a real job.

I don't see how this bill stalls anywhere. It's win/win, you either get scum off welfare, they clean up, or it opponents are vindicated. Complete common sense.

I wish. They should also make people take tests to pass in order to have kids.

Re: Gun Mandating Law

Curious how many of you that think its a good idea having a government mandate that you must purchase a firearm disagree with the government requiring you to purchase health insurance. Would like to hear exactly why you think the government has the right to mandate any have to purchase anything unwillingly.

How much would you estimate this "ironic point" they're trying to make is unnecessarily costing tax payers if that's the case, and how many people realize that? I think more people probably are taking it seriously than you think, or atleast will.

Did you post a pending bill for a law to discuss and expect people not to discuss it?

:p

I saw it as more of a joke than anything. I thought it was funny. Guess some people take things seriously all the time.

Most in SD understand this bill and why proposed and they have spent about 1 minute of time on it so tax payer cost is minimal. And for the point of having to take a test to have a kid my wife would go for that see works for dss.
