Hey guys, i recently bought my first AR to begin a (somewhat) long distance .223/5.56 platform. I had a 16" spikes tactical barrel and YHM muzzle brake pinned and welded as per NY state regulations. No he's the issue, upon cleaning the barrel before shooting this weekend i noticed when i looked through the muzzle a dark spot. To me it looked somewhat round in shape almost like a pit. I took a plastic hook and slid it into the muzzle and slowly pulled it back, sure enough the hook grabbed. What it seems to me is the guy who did it drilled THROUGH the threads, then pinned/welded it. Is this a cause for concern? is this general practice? I've never owned an AR before and i'm worried the guy buggered it up before i even got to shoot it.

TL:DR

Is a hole/divot at the end of the muzzle through the threads and one of the landings going to completely screw up my gun?

PS: I spoke to Steve at ADCO Firearms about the situation, he said i should be fine. I know he's reputable but i'd like some more input. Thanks for you time.

I would be pretty pissed about that!! But then don't forget there is another hole in the bore where the gas block is. I don't know that it would hurt anything, but it sounds like crappy workmanship to me.

mscott - oh believe me, i'm pretty livid right now! fortunately i found a licensed machinest who actually turns barrels for his own guns who's willing to cut & re-crown my barrel. And thankfully it's a 16" barrel so even with cutting it right below the threads and adding the PWS brake i ordered it's still over 16" so....i'll have like a 15" mid-length barrel haha.

The guy who did it will be paying for the barrel work that needs to be done as compensation.

Re: Had Brake installed, hole through threads???

We've pinned a lot of brakes and FH's. NEVER EVER done much more than put a decent divot in the threads. All the way through? BS!

Steve at ADCO said it was cool? Really? No wonder we get so many ADCO converts that send their barrels to us now. There is only one hole you need into your bore, the gasport. Another hole may not affect anything, but it still isn't right. The smith that did that would be buying me a new barrel.

Re: Had Brake installed, hole through threads???

They should have only drilled a small divot in the threads, put the pin in and put a tack weld over it. I have never seen anyone drill all the way through. I would be pissed too.

Sub-par work for sure.
Sounds like he did not measure twice before he cut once...
