im going to be doing some night shoots coming up and i have noticed a difference between the muzzle flash from one brand of factory rouds to another, (remmy seems much tamer and less flash than say fiocci)

Which powders are will give me the least muzzle flash and which will give me the most ?

would this be a property of the powder or of the load itself?

Re: Handgun Powder Question

There are powders that are designed to be low flash. Dont know any specific ones off the top of my head.

Another thing to watch will be related to barrel length and whether or not your powder charge is being consumed quick enough. IE take a load of H110 out of a short barrel 357. Muzzle fireworks.

Might be fun to try some lower power trail boss loads (depending on what your shooting). I bet there would be a very small flash from them.

Re: Handgun Powder Question

Clays and TiteGroup have low flash in when used in my G35, and I suspect N320 to be even better because brass looks almost unfired when ejected.

Re: Handgun Powder Question

I second the premise that the faster the powder, the less flash, as the reaction is completed sooner, leaving less to afterburn.

Titegroup from my Glock 30 (3.75" barrel) produces minimal flash.

Blue Dot from anything I've tried (10mm only), from 3.75" barrel on out to a 6" barrel produces the most ridiculous, fantastic and amazing flash I've ever seen from a pistol, including my 500 SW Mag!

Re: Handgun Powder Question

427,

I've run both all the VV pistol powders through a flash test in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 ACP. N-350 had the least amount of flash in those calibers without exception. N-350 had a darker red flash, while the other faster powders increased in color to bright yellow as the powder speed increased.
