I'm thinking of cutting down my 20inch LTR barrel to 16'inches. Has anyone chopped a fluted barrel? What did you do with the end of the barrel now that the flutes are no longer transitioning into a smooth surface? Pics?

Re: Has anyone chopped a fluted barrel

Only time I have seen it done where it didnt look like shit was when the barrel was threadded and the thread protector was flutted to match and terminate the flutes.

For starters it was an exceptional show of the smiths talents and second I'm sure its wasnt cheap to do. It did look very good and it was all around cool to see.

I have also seen it where a thread protector and a muzzle brake were fluted to match the barrel. Looked quite good. I personally wouldn't do it without ending the flutes properly on a cap or a brake. Not that hard for a good smith to do.

Gunsmiths over at awc chopped my barrel 26 to 18, still puzzles me how they squared off the flutes. great wrk though

Re: Has anyone chopped a fluted barrel

Looks like they chopped it, threaded it long put a collar on there to end the flutes, then put on a thread protector over the remaining threads. Looks like a good job.

Re: Has anyone chopped a fluted barrel

That's what I'm thinking too. They refinished the parts and you can't see the seam where the collar meets the barrel.

If you don't mind me asking what was the price on the work you had done. I am looking at getting the same thing done and I think the work you had done looks great. RollingThunder51 dirrected me to your thread. Any help would be great.
