Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

you probably oughta do a search and look up the numerous cleaning threads, dont clean it till accuracy drops off. But for your list you oughta be ok for the time being

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Here is a little war story on cleaning.

One of our High Master shooters put on a new Krieger in his match conditioned service rifle AR. He cleaned the bore and the BCG before he fired the first round. He shot the rifle in our local matches every Sunday till it did not go bang. He cleaned the bore and cleaned out all the carbon in the BCG. This was after 3700 rounds of NO cleaning.

He shot the rifle again every Sunday until our State Championship in Fort Wolters. During the 200 Slow Fire the rifle did not go bang again, this time he only had 3500 rounds with NO cleaning. He took the BCG apart and scraped the cardon off the firing pin and in the carrier and finished the match. Here is the kicker - He won the last event, the 600 yards slow fire prone, where the accuracy of the rig is challenged.

Just a different perspective on cleaning.

We all know you go to hell if you don't clean your rifle after each session on the range.

Cheers.......

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

I fired over 850 rounds through a brand new barrel before accuracy started to suffer (I did not use any break-in procedure). Then I cleaned the barrel (I only used about 15 patches) & went back to shooting the rifle. I now have close to 1000 rounds through the barrel since I last cleaned it & accuracy is still spot on.

In fact, I would almost be willing to wager that accuracy did not actually drop off the first time that I cleaned it; instead, it was probably me that was simply shooting it poorly.

You will find that everyone has their own barrel break-in procedure & cleaning routine.... me, I'd rather go shoot than clean.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

I do not clean if I know I am heading out to the range again soon. If I know I will be travelling for work, or for any reason not able to shoot my rifle again for a few month, then I will clean it, lube it, and feel more comfortable leaving it at home.

this is quite different than cleaning it after 40 rounds. Are you about to leave and travel for a few months then by all means clean it lube it up and put it up. If you are cleaning because you think its dirty worry about shooting more and cleaning less.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Sorry Deadly, didn't mean to confuse the OP, glad you bring out what I meant to say more clearly.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

I plan to shoot again next week. I have always cleaned my guns after shooting them. It just feels weird not to at least boresnake it and wipe the barrel with break free clp.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

if you utilize the search function you will find quickly that over cleaning( in your case after each session) will wear out a barrel faster than just shooting it. Shoot it when accuracy drops off then clean it. But its your rifle you do as you please

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Not to mention you may never know exactly how well it will ever shoot if you clean after every 20 or 30 rounds. My .308 has just over 450 rounds since the last cleaning.

No moly for him

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

I cannot NOT clean my gear after i shoot lol. From an early age (about 8) when i got my first air rifle my Dad always taught me to clean after i shoot, especially if it was raining. Now I just do it, get home from range, sort out my kit and give the rifles or pistols a quick cleaning. There is so much bullshit posted about cleaning, ask 10 shooters and get 10 different answers. If your system works keep using it, if it dosent work and your mega precision rifle is grouping like a shotgun then it is probably not your cleaning routine that is the cause.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Question for you who don't clean:
Do you worry about rust or corrosion? Do you have stainless or cm steel barrels? I have some rifles I clean and some I don't and I have always wondered what others do.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

Wooger - I will oil my action to keep it smooth... I don't worry about rust because where I live the humidity is so low that it is not something that I have had problems with. I agree w/ Fuscalino, ask 10 people & you get 10 different answers.

Only 40 rounds skip the cleaning and oil. I'll be shooting a match in the morning with the same rifle I shot last month at the same match. It hasn’t been cleaned yet and has been in the safe since last match, untouched. This rifle is undefeated to date. My .260 hasn’t been touched in several months and still drills.

Keep an eye out for carbon but other than that, hammer away. The rifle will let you know when it’s time.

Re: Haven't cleaned my rifle yet...

I've only got 115 rounds through my new .223AI so far. No break in and no cleaning, and no plans to clean until accuracy suffers.
