Help choosing manual case trimmer

If this specific info is in another thread, I could not find it. Please redirect me if it is.

I just sold my RCBS trimmer with 3way head, I found it to be very inconsistent with the inside and outside chamfer.

My question is for those who have experience with the Forster and Sinclair/Wilson, case trimmers. I would like to know which one is the better trimmer?

Wilson is a dead nuts repeatable micro lathe, but really this ain't no benchrest site, I use a Giraud now and my +\- is .0015, and guess what downrange it has made no difference.

+1 Wilson

Agree with getting the power driver attachment, and if you can swing it, the Sinclair sharkfin stand.

I have 2 Wilson trimmers, both on Shark stands, one to trim one to chamfer.

i also use the chamfer one as a meplat trimmer by switching out the cutter with a Whidden meplat trimmer insert.

Can't beat the Wilson for price/Accuracy. As someone above mentioned the time is definitely not going to be as good as a Giraud, but you can buy about 6-7 Wilson trimmers for that cost. Also, I don't think the wilson with the power adapter is any slower than any of the other small bench type trimmers other than the Giraud.

With the power adapter, which is highly recommended, you should be able to bust out 100 cases in less than 20 minutes easily. Hard to beat for the price.


Now, if only Sinclair (or someone) would build a three-way trim/cham/debur for it...

I don't know if sinclair has it, but Wilson makes a VLD chamfer cutter that goes in the Wilson trimmer.

It is very agressive, and only take 2-3 turns to get a good chamfer. Any more and you make the case neck edge micro thin. So I use the manual crank and not the power adapter when I chamfer.

Not only does it cut square as hell, it looks really nice on my bench

You guys that chamfer using your LE wilson trimmer...

do you hold the cases by hand or actually put them in the case holders?

Im not sure if the case holders are always 100% true in regards to the hole being centred exactly meaning the case neck will be chamfered inconsistently....

anyone heard or seen this problem before or am i just dreaming?

Looks Like I will be ordering a Wilson tomorrow.
My last question is about the shell holder, they sale 2 of them one for unfired brass and fired, do I need both? I size my cases with a RCBS, match fullsize die, new and used, then trim.

I hate to tell you, but you might need both. If you FL size every time, then you can USUALLY use the "new case" holder. If you neck size until you have to bump the shoulders (which I would think most reloaders do for bolt guns) then you will need to use the "fired case" holder after neck sizing, or it won't go into the case holder far enough to cut the mouth. Then when you have to bump the shoulders(3-5 firings depending on case, load and caliber) with a FL or shoulder die, then you'll have to use the "new case" holder that time.

Well, I got my Wilson trimmer, and the inside neck chamfer tool with it. I am not impressed! There is .006 slack in the so called tool holder bearing. Doesn't sound like much, but it is plenty for the chamfer tool to not work correctly. It takes a deep cut out of one side of the case, and barely touches the other!
Anyone else have this trouble?!

Havnt used it yet but its on order.

Have you tried just holding the cases with your fingers and running them into the chamfer tool that way?

burkeknives i just run the fired shell holder. Lapua brass does not need to be trimmed when new so by the time i get to it its usually had one or two firings.

The inside chamfer does not require the case to be held in the case holder. In fact it works better if not. The case holders are bored/reamed parallel to the holder axis, but not necessarily centered. This makes no difference when trimming, but does when trying to chamfer a case held in the holder.

I bought a Lyman.. Works great. I wanted a RCBS but the lyman was on sale. Haven't looked back...

I also use a Wilson can have no complaints at all. It's cheap and it works so well. Just make sure you have a table vise to put it in or get the $15 C plate to mount to your table.
