Looking for some advice on an scope. I am new to long range shooting and recently purchased a Rem 700 5R with 20 inch barrel.

I have on order a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 FFP. After a bunch or research I felt this scope would be a great starter scope. I unfortunately started to research other high end scopes which got me thinking. I am usually the type of person that likes the nicer things in life and don't mind paying for a better experience.

My around 2k research lead me to the following

Viper Razor HD 5-20x
- Cons = Japan, to much magnification

S&B Police marksmen 4x16
- seems like an old design, no illumination

Steiner 4-16x50 Military
- seems perfect specs however no one can tell me much about it and it is non-existent on their website.

Eliminated scopes - NF (almost everyone likes the S&B more) Premier (read post about the MAP - assholes)

so tell me, what would you do?

Re: Help choosing optics

Dont count out Premier because of MAP. All those scope manufacturers have a MAP policy. If money is no object I would look at the S&B 5-25 with the H2CMR reticle. Hard to beat.

+1 ... you just eliminated one of the best $2K scopes (used) for no reason.

I agree. Premier makes a great scope. All of the manufactures have a MAP policy.

Re: Help choosing optics

I would not eliminate the nightforce. For a working scope they are hard to beat value wise, and yes everyone likes the SB but not everybody wants to shell out the coin for them. I personally like the Nightforce reticle options over the SB money difference be damned. The SBs in some models like dangerous game hunting scopes etc goes hand down to the SB, but for tactical or match shooting pick whichever trips your trigger and know that you can't go wrong with either>
