Hi I'm new here and am looking for help deciding what bullet to run in my project 300wm build. First off it's a rem700 w/26" ER Shaw barrel, alluminum bedded stock, and will have a vortex viper pst on top of it very soon. I've been running 208 A-max with imr 4350 with great results but want to be able to use it as a back up hunting rifle as well as for punching paper. I had tried 180bt but the 200-210gr area bullets seemed to fly best in her. I've been looking at 200gr accu bond as well as barnes tsx and tipped tsx 200gr. Animals hunted will mostly include white tail, russian boar, black bear, and elk. My concern with the barnes is after reading many reports that they may not peform well past 400yds. I looked at berger vld hunting but I would like to have some meat after the animal goes down. Ranges of course will vary while hunting from close in to realistic distance of ? depending on conditions and other factors. Punching paper distance locally will be 100 to 300yds and when travel permits out to 1000yds. Best I have by me. Not to sure if I'll be able to get a good accurate bullet for punching paper as well as hunting....might be asking for to much.
I would also consider this bullet for a HK91, 30-06(savage 110 and 1903a3), and my wife's rem 700 243-these being the main hunting rifles, game taken would of course vary with each.

Re: help deciding on a bullet for my 300wm

I used the 200AB on my trip to Africa and it performed every shot as advertised. Retained between 66-68% of the weight smallest critter was a impala largest was a zebra.
.
That was with a 300RUM. For you considerations I'd also look at the 180 Etip..it has better weight retention an BC still isnt to bad.

Re: help deciding on a bullet for my 300wm

Thin jacket that dumps all of it's weight. Makes a mess if you catch a white tail in any of the muscle(shoulder, back straps, ect) on entry or exit. Not to mention lack of penetration especially if hitting bone/dense muscle on game more than white tail size-at least from the reports I've read. The dumping of the weight, damage to the meat, and lack of penetration if striking bone/heavy muscle are the reasons I've not looked further at the berger VLD hunting.
I found a few reports on the 200gr accu bonds that were claiming they flew almost as good as a match bullet. Any one here have thought on that?

Re: help deciding on a bullet for my 300wm

I could get them under an inch for 5 and had 3 close to touching. Not sure on exact group size for the time I had for shots an distances I was shooting I wasnt to worried about one ragged hole. I've shot the 165 accubonds out of my 308 on just a trial basis for the heck of it an they were shooting good. So the potential is there just take some time with the load.
.
Although as mentioned given what your looking at doing I'd seriously consider the etip in the 180. Better weight retention and should fly about the same.
.
But I can say for sure the 200AB performed as advertised. ***DISCLAIMER: IF you buy a box that has been on the shelf for a while you may want to call and check with nosler. They had an issue with the tips breaking on some of them very easy. This was due to an employee (now former) error. I had a box that fell into the recall batch. They sent me a new box without a problem. Any questions give them the lot # and they'll let ya know>***
.
Be safe...hit'm hard

Yep this is what I feed my 300 wby and it was a shooter. That rifle was sub .5 moa on a bad day. The VLDs may have a leg up with BC but I'd put accubond equal with accuracy.

Re: help deciding on a bullet for my 300wm

I ordered the 20ogr accubond. Will report back once I get some loads worked up for it. Going to try IMR4350 since I have that right now and it has worked well with the 208gr A-Max but would be open to other suggestions if it may work better.

Re: help deciding on a bullet for my 300wm

I orded some Nosler ballistic tips (green) 180gr. I have not had a chance to load them up yet. I am in the same boat as you. From what I read it a good compromise for hunts and paper shooting.
