Ok guys I've posted a lot of threads lately asking about different calibers, etc. I've got to figure out a direction I want to go and stick with it.

I've currently got a Surgeon short action, but thinking of going with a long for greater options. I figure if I'm going to spend this kind of money I need to get an all around rifle. Long range hunting, great accuracy, etc.

So what do you guys think I outta do? Build something in a 7mm saum, 280 ai, 7mm rem mag...what? What's your favorites and why? Should I jump right off into a XL receiver and build a 338 lapua? That would be pretty nice...cover all my bases...

Currently I have 4-5.56mm's, 6.5 grendel, 6mm rem mag, 300RUM, .270, .22's, .17s, etc. I want an all arounder...

I vote for anything .284. A 7wsm in a SA and a 7rm in a long. Great accuracy, decent barrel life. Shoot a long dang way with it. A .284 with a Berger 180 vld just might be bliss...

Long is relative. Since you already have a 300 RUM, that should get you out pass 1K easily. Yes, you can get the 7 WSM, or 7RM way out there too. But, I vote for 338LM. You can take just about anything coming your way. JMO

Ok in that case would you go w/a customer rifle w/a surgeon xl or pick up one of the Remington MLR's? I'm a Remington fan so that would be a nice gun to me and cheaper than the custom. Then again once I get the MLR I'll probably want to change the stock, etc...

The only reason I didn't say 338LM to begin with was ammo/brass pricing...so damn expensive!

I would vote 284 on long action, w/ 300wm aics mags. Theres not alot that round cant do, plus its not quite the barrel burner the other 7mm's are.

Or you could just do what i am doing and build a 7mm-08 on the surgeon short action you already have. not as fast but easier on barrels still great in wind and relatively cheap to shoot, 308 brass and 162 amaxs.

tough choice but we all have to make them eventually.

Why do you think you need a .338? I would consider the .338Edge and .338LM more of specialty cartridges as oppossed to an "all around" choice. How do you define "long range hunting" and what critters do you intend to pursue at long range?
