Hey guys i just picked up my new rifle today. Its a stock remington 700 sps varmint in .223. It has the 26 inch barrel with a 1 to 12 twist rate and short action. I know, not exactly super quality stuff, i know. Im not looking for a 1000+ yard rifle obviously, But i was hoping someone could give me some help.

I am looking to use this rifle mostly for varmints: prairie dogs, rabbits, and coyotes ECT. As far as range goes, I do not know how many yards im looking for. What do you think a realistic range would be with a good quality hand load?

I am currently looking at the nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40 scope. It has a 1' tube and the O.D. of the objective is 49.3 mm. Would this serve me well for this type of shooting. Do you think it's a quality scope that would last me over the years. And no i am not looking for a $1000 scope, so dont suggest it.

Also i am kind of lost on what i should get for mounting the scope. I am thinking picatinny is what a lot of you use right? Which would be a good quality brand, and the same for the rings? Also i tried to calculate the ring height needed, but i think i miscalculated.

Any help you guys can provide would be appreciated. I have done my research, but i still am somewhat hesitant to make any purchases.
Thanks

Re: Help me with Scopes and base's

Nikon makes a quality product, I've always thought them very clear and bright, don't recall their warranty, 14X may be a little low if you're pushing your yardage way out on the prairie dogs. I suspect 400-500yds should be doable with effectively small groups for varmits, and you'll get to learn all about doping the wind. If you want a pic. rail get one, you probably don't need any cant though. I have a 56mm obj on my SPS-V, on a Weaver 20MOA rail, in TPS low rings (.925 base to center), this leaves me with about .0625 clearance bezel to barrel. Depending on your base you could go allot lower with that 40mm. HTH
