help please new lapua wont go in to die!!

Forster FL sizing die in .308 win. new .308 lapua brass will not go final 3/16 of an inch into die. i have started die set up over 5times and counting tring to find my misstake and havent. help please!!

and no this isnt my first time setting up dies.

is it just one piece of brass or all of them?

have you used this die before on other brass?

expander ball has been check 3times but i havent moved it it is where the instructions say in should be.

yes i have lubed the case and have tried no lube.

new dies and new brass.

on the case throats you can see where its been against the die but only down half way. ive only tried 2 cases but from 2 dif. boxes.

It sounds like you need to raise your expander ball up.

just tried it never changed how much case wouldnt go in. i even took it out and tried same 3/16 of an inch wont go in. im lost.

Is the die far enough down in the press? Maybe your press ran out of room to push up?

Try cases from another brand of brass that you can size and see if they work.

If they do work, measure those near the web/head area and compare them to the Lapua cases at the same location.

Maybe out of spec brass, if other brands will size properly, in that die you have?

If those won't size, it's a bad die and needs to be returned for an exchange.

You might also remove the expander stem altogether and see if they'll size properly.

die is in press corretly.

All i have is lapua brass....

i think i have a bad die.

Take a pic of this last 3/16" that your referring to. Then back away and take a pic of the entire press.

What "Type" of lube? I have a buddy who uses hornady spray lube, and he got cases stuck when he tried to FL 6.5 creedmoor brass in a new Type S Redding bushing die. He thought the die is bad, then I tried my RCBS lube with the grease pad, it worked great.

Another note, standard Forster FL die will give you alot more neck tension like .007 I think, I can't remember. But this should not be the problem.

You need to move the expander ball DOWN. It is too high in the die and preventing the neck from contracting, into the neck sizing portion of the die.

wouldnt the placement of the expander been ruled out when i tried with it completely out of the die??

I make .22-250 cases from .30-06. Believe me, if you use a good lube applied correctly and push the lever hard enough any case will enter - and extract from - any sizer.

This is just my experience... My first press is a Lee classic cast single stage press. I found that the last 1/4" while FL a 308 brass to be difficult. It felt like the bar was flexible/bending. I then tried a RCBS Rock Chucker, which has a thicker bar and it worked much better. Now I use Lee press for things other than FL, such as depriming. It might work ok for FL 6.5 or 6mm brass, but I haven't tried.

Lapua makes great brass and in my limited experience the necks seem to be much thicker than other brands which is a good thing. I have an older Cooper Varminter in 22PPC and a Redding Competition Seater die. With <span style="text-decoration: underline">unturned</span> case necks the case will NOT fit into the die without a tremendous amount of force that crimps the hell out of the bullet which is not good! The Lapua case necks must be turned down a bit. It's not an issue with other brands. However your problem is with a FL sizing die. I'd try another brand of brass just to make sure it's not the die.

off work today set everything back up and started over yet again. same as last time but this time i got a light and looked in the die A SMALL BIT OF PLASTIC!!! dont know how i didnt see it when i cleaned it! thanks guys dies are good to go and i feel stupid.

Well, good news then. We all do stupid stuff in this hobby, but hopefully it's something that doesn't blow us, or our guns, up.

At least you didn't have to send it back.
