Fellow shooters,

Im looking to re-barrel my SPS-T in .308 which has sat in the safe since I had a custom 308 built for me. Hoping the 6.5CM will work well as a tactical / practical round for mild competition, small to medium size game and occasional ELR.

Looking at putting together a trued 700, 24" medium palma and a Manners EH1 w/ MCS.

The rifle will be topped with a MK4 3.5-10X FFP Mil/Mil (also sitting in the safe)

So.. does the above make sense for 80% 1000yd range, 10% whitetail/coyote/fox, 10% shooting a mile?

Thanks,

Lafayette

24" is as long as I would go. I went 22" on my GAP and can easily hit 2800 fps with the 140 amax without having to hot rod it. I suggest shorter over longer. 24" would be max I would go. There seems to be 2 schools of thought and that is short like 20-22" or long 26-28". If only shooting factory ammo I would lean towards the longer barrel. If you are going to hand load you can go to a shorter barrel and load for the velocity you want.

Oh and meant to say.....if you aren't going to run a suppressor short probably isn't as important...shorter barrel does make it a lot more handy but when you put a 9" suppressor ever inch shorter in the barrel helps with the over all length.

I think u got a fast barrel or fairly warm loads. I have had 1-24"&3-26" 6.5 cm. The 24" could only see 2725, any hotter and groups went to shit. The other 3 could get from 2775-2840 with 140 amax, but they are pretty warm and i won't kid anybody that they are mild or easy on brass. 26" isn't too long for that contour now if u wanted mtu or m40a3 it would be a pig. Personally i prefer a scope with more topend then 10x. Not sure what ur limit is on glass $ or weight limit, but i would rather have a dmr 3.5-21 or ss5-20 hd. Sure they are heavier and cost some more but u don't loose anything on the bottom end for hunting and double ur topend for those 80% 1k shots.

Yea I was a bit shocked that factory ammo I was getting the rated FPS on the box yet that is with a longer barrel. I load 1 grain higher then factory and that gives me an extra 70 FPS. The suppressor also gives me about an extra 18fps.

Thanks for the responses - just to clarify the 10x isnt ideal but will have to do for now. (and FWIW I had a SWFA 5-20 for a couple of years and still have some fixed SS's and have no intention of buying the 5-20 again, that's a whole other story and not really interesting)

No intentions of running a can.

Dtibbals, how are u running a can legally in il? I'm in so east il and the only time i get to play with a can is when i go to my buddies in In.

I have a place in WI just over the boarder that I keep all my fun NFA toys...belong to a rifle club with long range just over the boarder so shoot there with them and then enjoy them when I go to training classes and visit family in NFA friendly states. I don't plan on living in the communist state of IL any longer then I have to so figured I might as well get them while you legally can and enjoy them now then wait till I can move.

I can tell you what I built and I like. A Manners T5A stock, 700 trued receiver and bolt, I can not remember what recoil lug, Wyatt's DBM, Broughton 5C 1:8 24" barrel, Seekins base and rings, US Optics 3.2-17x44 scope. waiting on stamp for suppressor.

I'd say that'll work pretty well, just what has been said before, the scope could use a bit more power on the top end. Don't have any experience with any manners stock besides my T4a but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

I've got a savage action in a manners T4a with a 28" CBI heavy bull barrel, and a vortex pst 6-24. I love it, and it works for most everything I need it to do. The only thing that I would change is get a lighter barrel (like the med. palma you want, and cut it down a few inches. 22-26).

What caliber? If 6.5cm what FPS you working with?
