HELP - Switching Munitions :)

Hey Guys,

I recently have been practicing shooting with my .308 and have been using FMJs. Well now hunting season is open and I don't want to use the FMJ (not sure if they are even legal), so I am having a good buddy load me some hollow points. So my main question is do I need to re-zero my scope with the new rounds?

My gut reaction says yes, but I am still new to the game and want a definitive answer.

You may find that your new load shoots to the same point of impact as what you are shooting now but you may find that it doesn't and you should always check.

What specific bullet is your friend loading for you? Some hollpwpoints are not really suitable for hunting use.

the answer is correct. However, there is a second way of doing that also. I do this since I shoot both 155 scenars and 175 SMK. My rifle is zeroed for the 155 scenars at 3000 fps. My scope has a zero stop on that so I kept that as it is. From there, I zeroed my 175 SMK which requires exactly 2 MOA up from where my 155 scenars was. So, if I want to shoot the 155 scenars, I keep it exactly where it is. If I have the 175 SMK on hand then I dial up 2 MOA first before dialing in the elevation. Both zeroes are repeatable. I check it with cold bore shot at 100 yards periodically and it must hit a 1" dot, usually at the center but doesn't always happen. As long as the first cold bore shot hits the 1" dot at 100 yards, I am happy with my zero. Hope that helps.

Not 100% yet, I am going to talk to him later. He will know what type to make for elk hunting.

Not 100% yet, I am going to talk to him later. He will know what type to make for elk hunting.

I am curios to know if the FMJ where hand loaded, are they the same grain as the HP he is loading for you? Is he going to use the same powder/primers? If not you will definitely have to re-zero your scope.... I would use SP for hunting.....

WHY would you shoot someone elses hand loads?

That is the NUMBER ONE rule in reloading, you DONT shoot anyones loads in your gun. What may be safe in his rifle may not be safe in yours.

I did not understand your train of thought here, if the Lymann's book states to use X amount of grains using X powder how does this make it unsafe for any, let's say, .308 rifle??

Nothing unsafe about any hand loads as long as you use the proper powder and correct amount... Now you get a moron that does not know what he is doing then I could understand....

From what I gathered from the OP is that his buddy has done this for a while, so no worries here...

....

I do not know. I will re-zero anyway just to be safe.

Well we have a Jedi-Padawan relationship, and he is making rounds specifically for my rifle so I really think you are off here.

re-zero anyway just to be sure + at max range you will shoot an animal
, 308 is fine for elk,
