Hey guys and gals, I am pretty new to this so bear with. I am going to purchase a Remington 700 Tactical Long Range in 300 winmag, and I was wanting to put an aftermarket Laminated thumbhole stock on it. I looked at Boyds, but I honestly don't really know as much as I should. What are my options here and what should I tell the gunsmith? Do I have to go with the varmint because of the thick barrel or do I go with the featherweight? How much work is involved to get it perfect and how should it be bedded? Please send me your advice. I am very humble and appreciate it very much.

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

Well you could go with Manners or AICS for thumbhole stocks. Most guys prefer those two. With the AICS you won't need to bed it and you can order the Manners with his chassis system which I believe you don't have to bed it either. If your keeping the factory barrel, get the Varmint. What exactly do you plan to have a gunsmith do?

Here is a link. It's the Snipers Hide Google Search engine. It will be your best friend: Link

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

Well, I am keeping the factory barrel. I plan on having the gunsmith put the guts into the stock. I do not want to do this myself and screw it up. I am a amateur when it comes to this long range game, and don't plan on messing things up too bad.

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

Accurate Innovations makes a thumbhole also that has the aluminum bedding block and you can order one that is fitted for your bottom metal, barrel contour etc.

Correction. If you can tighten two screws, have a torque wrench, and long head 3/16 allen bits your good to go.

Ask me how I know.

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

If you look at Boyds newest offerings, you will see they make a Tactical laminated stock in an A3 configuration. It has an aluminum bedding block, and your Remington factory action will drop right in (bbl channel is cut for the varmint bbl). Your bottom metal will fit, and you just install the 2 bolts. Your gunsmith would love this one...5 minute job.

They are offering it in about 16 colors, and cost is $299. You don't need to spend extra to have it bedded!

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

Go for an AICS and don't worry about it.

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

I installed mine last night. It took a little ingenuity. Nobody carries long head 3/16's allen in town...

That said, so far I like the feel of the AICS 1.5. I'll find out how it shoots next weekend.

Re: HELP!! Thumbhole Stock Idiot here.

I have the HS Precision PST 083 and I love it. No need to bed it via a gunsmith.

Take stock off by removing 2 screws. Replace with new stock (some will have new screws, others won't).

I've read good things about both the Manners and AI, but don't let that deter you from a HS Precision. It's top notch gear.

+1 on the HSP Thumbhole.. I have several on 1/4 MOA setups. The AICS & Manners are also great as I have both as well.

You are never going to learn unless you try brother.

I plan to teach myself how to bed a rifle using one of my Savage 17HMR rifles before I move to my M40A1 build

The problem is finding a straight one for my new torque wrench. I ended up sawing a long one off and using a 3/16 socket. Works for the borka wrench.

That name is awesome BTW. One word words that start with I for $100
