Good morning,

I am new to the world of long distance precision rifles. I picked up a new Remington 700p and was seeking help on a bottom metal replacement so I can add a 10 round magazine. I have the hs precision stock that came on the rifle and need some advice on which company to go with that would allow me to have a drop magazine without much in the way of smithing.

Thank you

Anyway you go the stock is going to have be inlet for DBM. CDI Precision makes a good DBM and will inlet your stock for free. Badger Ordnance, Pacific Tool & Gauge, Seekins Precision, Wyatt's and others also make good detachable bottom metal. I'd stay away from the off brand stuff on ebay.

Maybe this is a stupid question but long term are you planning on sticking with the hs stock? If not it might not be worth paying that much for bottom metal now when you are just ganna get rid of the stock later.

Just a thought

Some considerations. Have you confirmed the barrel is free floating after you've configured the rifle how you will shoot it. As an example, once you install a bipod, it may force the stock against the barrel. Have you tested for accuracy - at a minimum zeroed at say 100 yards with 3 rounds within 1 inch? Once installed, the DBM could effect bolt operation and accuracy. Nothing is easy or simple with these rifles.

I would not drop too much money in the HS precision stock.
They are well made, but the ergo's suck.
You have two, drop in, no modifications that are reasonably priced available to you, both use a proprietary magazine.
I have the legacy sports, it works VERY well, but it is polymer and likely won't take much abuse.
The Wyatt DBM

and the Legacy Sports

I have the legacy system in 3, 700's an have used them like rented mules for over 2 years w/o issue. Like many say they look flimsy, but I've never had an issue with any of them. Wish they made one for a 300wm action that would allow 3.555 in the mag. I'd get those for both 300's.

My 700p came used with the HS precision detatchable mag bottom metal. It works well enough, but I don't know how much fitting it took. The mags are insanely expensive at $155 or something like that. I have a surplus 10 round mag incoming, so I will try to get back in here with a report on how it works.

I had the wyatts drop in system, it was floppy but it fed perfectly. I tried the bolt in BDL from PTG, You will have to inlet to make it feed. The mags for the system suck. Its worth your time to send it out and get it inletted for the M5 print, that will cover most of your DBM systems that use AI mags and feed reliably.

Make the move to an AI based system. This will give you dead reliable mag's which can be used on several platforms.
You can then buy your spare mag's and have them for other rifles should your inventory increase.
So now I am able to use my 10rd AI's in my Remington 700, Savage Mod 10 and my Winchester M70.
Also don't worry about the cost of the bottom metal, if you decide later to upgrade your stock just sell the used stock
without the bottom metal. The buyer of your used stock can source his own preferred brand knowing it is already inletted.
Several good company's can supply you with replacement, I myself prefer Badger Ordnance.
Buy what you want, get that stock inletted and properly installed and GO shoot!

The HS system that I believe USPatriot is referencing takes about 5 minutes and a simple file to inlet. So if you like the HS stock, stick with it. The mags are expensive but they are nice. I would say my HS with the HS system is on par to my Manners with their mini-chassis (also very nice) and Accurate mags.

Yes. That is good to know the Inletting isn't that involved. The 10 round mag showed up and it is really good, maybe better than the 4 round mag that it came with. I think I will try to get a couple more.
