I have a Savage 308 with the choate stock and Im looking at what would be the best scope for the bang.... I have talked to my dad a ton about it and he is night force guy, but there is no way i can fork out that kind of cash. I have been reading tons and tons of reviews and finally just decided to join snipers hide and ask the pros.... I am considering the Wotac 4-14x50, from what I have read its Matt Wonders basically building them out of his basement... Then I was considering the Millet LRS1 it seems like a nice scope, heavy but thats not a problem for me. It also has 140 MOA that will be really nice if I want to shoot 1K with a 308 (only 80 MOA on the Wotac).... But those are just two that im looking at. Other things I would like to have but not set on are: Illuminated Reticule, Adjusting power, clear glass, enough MOA to get out there, and a good warranty because I know lower grade class can have some problems. Thanks for your help!!!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

First off... welcome to the Hide. Secondly, put on your nomex, as there are about to be 1,000s of people flaming you to use the search function. Once the yelling settles down to a low roar and the flames have been put out, pick yourself back up and do some reading here in the optics section.

OK, now to "try" and give you some direction here. First things first... you will need to decide a budget. After you decide on the budget, have a list of what features you are wanting. There are numberous scope manufactures, with hundreds of offerings, with just as many differnet features. Just check some scopes out and see what makes your trigger finger itch that fit into that budget range.

Only YOU can decide what is the best bang for YOUR buck. Things that excite the "masses", don't necessarily make it a workable scope for you. I would also recommend attending some gunshows and actually putting your hands on some.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Thanks z71rat.. Sorry about just jumping in but I did search a lot for the last month and it seems like everything I could find was all older especially on Millet. Now they are a part of Bushnell im not sure how their QC is. Im honestly scared to jump into when 50% of their customers are having problems. But honestly its hard to wade through all the scopes. My loads are just factory right now. Im in the process of buying reload equipment too.. Man this hobby is expensive!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

In the price range you are referring to, compromises must be made. The one with the best track record, and fewest compromises is the S.S.10x. IMO, the next step-up,is the 3x9 vari S.S., but it almost double the price. The reason I do not recommend lower-price variables,is because of the advise I was given while shopping for a scope, which was the more features a lower price scope has, the less likely any of them are going to be worth a shit!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

No apology is necessary. I saw where you had been checking reviews, and THEN joined the Hide. The optics section here is superb, and alot of knowledge to be had here.

I have owned many different scopes, from a super cheap Tasco up to a Nightforce NXS. Most of what I know has been through trial and error, but at least I know what works for ME. There are so many choices out there and it can definately get confusing. The confusing side comes from the fact that if someone owns brand X scope, it is the greatest thing on earth!!

I have been on the tight budget thing before, and will probably be there for some time. I took a chance on an Explore Optics 4-16x50MM Tactical, and I was very pleased with it. It passed all the testing that I gave it and never missed a beat. I originally paid $379 for mine, but you should be able to get into one (should you chose that route) for around $300 give or take. I "used" to be friends with a dealer, but I have no more ties with him. Check out the Explore Optics website and find a dealer near you. You just might be happily surprised.

Another great source is SWFA. Chris is a standup guy and his customer service is awesome!! He carries a very well stocked list of new and used items that I am sure will get you going in the right direction.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

So I took a look at those Explore Scopes and they look light they have great light transmission. They look like what im looking for but Wotac is very comparable to them it looks like. Whats the best way to get a hold of Chris at SWFA and see what he has in the used section?? Im definately not worried about a couple scratches cause Im planning on painting it anyways.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Your a great help!! But I Have been looking and Im thinking of just saving up and going with a VortexViper PST 6-24x50.... I have a Vortex spotter and absolutely love it! So Im not sure what to do... But your help has been amazing thank you!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

You are most welcome!! In my opinion, save what money you can to get the best optic you can possibly afford. An extra $100 or so can make a tremendous difference in your grief level.

Post some pics when you get it put together. Some range reports would be a nice thing too. Best of luck with the setup!!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

as a millett owner, id say buy the super sniper. warranty for millett is great, too bad you might have to find out how i know that. search the site using millett, plenty of threads.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Hey bud I have a have Savage 10FCP Tactical Choate stock. I was pretty much in the same road you were on. The max I was willing to spend on the scope was about $500.

So now to the good stuff..
I was looking to shoot out to 1k and I was looking at the Nikon Monarch 4-16x-42mm and they have them in 4-16x-50mm too I believe. And those are really nice scopes.

But the more I looked at the super sniper and how good its been for people, and the price tag..it got me thinking. But then again the problem was that its a fixed scope...

Well I tried scoping in the other day at a tower that is a mile away from my house and it looked damn clear with the 10x.
So I would definitely would give the 10x Super Sniper some thought...

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

All good advice so far and I might add that you check the "for sale" section here.Scopes don't usually get abused too badly and you might score something really sweet and save a few bucks.Good luck and if you think it's expensive now.......

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

The super snipers are great scopes for the money but stick with the 10 power maybe the 16 but stay away from the 20 the exit pupil is too small and light transmition is not great. I have had both the 10 and the 16 and would choose the 10. The exit pupil is larger and the reticule is smaller. They are very tough scopes. But I would have to say save your pennys and get a leupold that meets your specs, try for the vxiii, you will not be disapointed and you can get used ones reasionable. The only reasion I say this and I know its proably out of your budget but its cheeper in the long run to just buy 1 scope and not start low and upgrade as you can, that is from a lot of experiance trading scopes.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

I completely agree with you guys about the SS fixed. There is one problem, and thats the fixed power. I do a lot of coyote hunting and I know this is a little big for a coyote gun but it would be one fun gun to shoot them. Say you got one sittin on his honches 500 yrds this gun can do it for my 22 250 its a little far out there. There are those stands you go on and ten power on a scope is just way too much. I just need the variable power.
I was looking around and have found the Falcon 4.5-18x56 IR and was wondering if any of you guys have had problems with them. From what I read they used to be a two piece but of april of 09 they went to a one piece?? Anyone own one in a one piece? let me know what you guys think of them

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Hey, I'm new to this as well and I just picked up a Rem 5R .308 and have the same trouble as you with looking at glass for it. I think I have narrowed my search down to the SS 3-9x if I buy one right now or try and wait for the Vortex PST for more options and more zoom. I'm leaning towards waiting for the Vortex but its hard to see the new rifle just sitting in the corner.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Abiz,

I've got you covered.

BUY THEM BOTH....Hahahaha! Trust me, if you hang-out here long enough, YOU WILL be buying another gun or ten too put your "extra" scope on.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Shit man my wife would kill me! lol My head is on the chopping block for this new one. My wife put me on the three year program a new bow and rifle every three years!

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

I think i might just go rob the closest bank and then I might be able to afford a NF. key word might. they are so expensive. Personally Im just gonna wait till my pops kicks the bucket then I will have multiple NF scopes lol. jk

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

Vortex makes some great stuff! I have one of their spotters and absolutely love it! Their warranty is tough to beat. Its just tough to wait when I have a new gun without a scope just beggin to be shot! Im talking to Matt at Wonder Optics and he is definitely helping me make a decision. The world of optics hard to wade through! So many people with different opinions. Thats why you go to the SH to figure shit out.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

If it was me I would get a 10x Super Sniper (older version) used, then when the PST comes out you could sell it and get the PST. Thats what I was going to do but I will just wait it out.

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

I agree with all the folks saying you will get more bang for the buck(aka a better scope) if you stick with a fixed. People I know swear by the 10x super sniper...feedback is a little less positive on the 20x.

10x is good for long range shooting, not so much for hunting as you have pointed out. You will have to decide what is important. With limited funds, you'll have to compromise...depends on what you do most. Does your rifle have iron sights? It can be a lot of fun hunting with iron sights. :)

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

+1 on the SS as mentioned already. I picked one up in the FS section a few years ago. For the money it's a great scope. It went back for service and they sent me a brand new one which now lives on my 40X.

I bought a LTR back in August and just last week mounted my new (not to mention first) Nightforce. I had to sell stuff, and save up... the whole time looking at my new rifle sitting there with no optic. This time I decided to 'buy once/cry once' and am glad I did.

You said he's a NF guy. Maybe your dad would give you a deal on one of his which would give him an excuse to go buy a new one

Re: Help with a Tactical Scope for my 308

hahaha ya I wish. That guy doesnt sell anything! He is one of those guys that just has to talk to wife into and he basically can get anything. He just got a POF 308 and is waiting for his NF to put on it. But those POFs are sweet shooters! Extremely accurate and no need for oil. Now thats a dream gun. lol
Thanks for your help guys!
