Hello, I'm gathering and ordering components for my first custom rifle, I have ordered a Surgeon 591 and bottom metal, I'm looking at the barrel next.

It's going to be a 223AI, it will get shot alot and see long strings of fire so I'm thinking something on the heavy side it the way to go. It will get packed in the field very little if at all so thats not a big issue.

I was planning on ordering a Krieger and waiting the 6 - 8 months it takes to get one up here in canada but I found a couple that may suit my needs in stock.

One is a Rem Varmit Contour, the other is a #17 Heavy Varmit Contour, both are 1 in 7, SS

I'm thinking the #17 is the better fit for my application and I like that it has a 5" shank, it is a 32" bhank so I assume it has a slower taper, this will make it a little heavier than a 27" blank . (Not sure where I will have it cut to, prob 22-25")

What are your thoughts?

The #17 is pretty heavy, I have that barrel on my custom 308 and its 28 inch. Not a rifle you wanna walk around with but like you said, you won't be doing much walking with it so go for it. If weights not an issue for you why not 26-28 inch for the extra velocity?
