I now have 50 pieces of 2nd fired brass that i want to prep fora for more firing. The cases differ a fair amount in OAL. I would like to trim the cases so that they all have the same OAL to help my loads have more uniform neck tension. I'm not having any problems with my loads feeding or extracting. How do you determine how much to trim off? I'm using the Forster manual case trimmer. I'm shooting a Bat Action 300 winmag through a Krieger barrel. Thanks.

Re: Help with case trimming

Come on people, he's got 50 cases of random varying length that feed and extract just fine, and wants to make them all the same.....find the shortest one and trim to THAT length to make them all the same.

This ain't rocket science......

Re: Help with case trimming

I'm with Tripwire, find your shortest case and as long as it is between the trim-to and the max length, which it is since they have only been shot three times, set your trimmer to that case and have at it. There is no other way to get them all the same length.

If by some stretch (no pun intended) the cases are longer than the max, you have a choice as to how long you want them again, between the cut-to and the max.

X3 on trimming to length of shortest if your goal is uniformity. If not you will spend an unnecessary amount of time measuring and sorting through brass. If you research case trimming here you will see many differing opinions on the subject. From test results I have seen between same case length vs slightly differing case length, accuracy is not affected much if any. Just keep below max spec to prevent problems.

SAAMI says that the max case length for 300 Win Mag is 2.620. I have a Giraud trimmer. I set up the case holder to trim to 2.612 then tighten down the lock ring set screw. I use a 0.003 shim under the lock ring to hit 2.615. I can trim 100 cases in about 15 minutes.

I realize that 300WM necks are short but I don't want to screw around with this. There is no magic to 2.615 - it just fits in every barrel I have put on the gun. Like Mr. Tripwire said, this ain't rocket science - the actual number is less important than making them all the same.
