Was looking to change things up and start loading for and shooting my K98 BCD4 with original Zeiss Zielsechs glass. The problem I seem to have with the rifle is that the stock weld is almost nonexistent due to the height of the long side rail mount setup it has; this pretty much requires some sort of improvised cheek rest to get anything resembling a consistent sight picture.

I tried to start with an Eagle stockpack, but it slides around on the wood stock very easily, plus its not high enough. I was considering 'building up' a base with cardboard strips and reinforcing it with riggers tape until I get the right height but am not sure if the cardboard would hold up and give a consistent height. My other idea was to use old carpet padding and riggers tape, but it seems to be too soft.

I do not want to alter the rifle in any way and drill into the stock for a kydex cheekpiece.

What have you used or seen used in the past for a solid improvised cheek piece?

    Thanks

I don't think I have ever seen a 98 that was modified for the cheek weld from real WWII pics.

The Brits used a wooden cheek piece on their Enfield snipers, model "T" if memory serves.

That being said it wouldn't "time period correct" but ISO (exercise) mat and duct tape has been the USMC standard since both came out. Lots of pics of Marines w/ their M-40's all taped up.

I think Switchblade45 even used one of those cheap MTM bore guides in the "sammich" as a bore guide so he didn't have to take the pad apart to clean the bore from the rear. Just be care full not to build up the sides too much while building your height.

    Cheers,

    Doc

One of the version of the original cheek rest in leather,

Good modern versions made in the US.

Instead of cardboard try a few pieces of old GI sleeping mat. To keep the cheekpad from sliding around try a blast of 'tacky' spray available in most craft sections of Walmart. It will take some layers of padding to build a stock carved for iron sights up to where you want to be with a scope.

I took several roughly cut pieces of sleeping mat, glued them together with e6000 and then taped them to the stock to dry. They conformed to the stock's curve and I trimmed them smooth once they set. I made a cover out of canvas with velcro tabs to secure.

Works well enough for me, Good Luck.

foam pipe insulation( already has the curved shape) comes in various thickness, to hold it on - vet tape - stretchy and slightly tacky cloth tape. After I use it for a while and am sure it is the best height I remove the tape + use spray glue to hold it on, then cover with moleskin for a comfortable, durable surface. To remove it, tear off the foam and use gun cleaner for the glue.
