i am thinking for buying a 2.5x10x32. i am wondering how far you can shoot at deer size game with no focus. also i am wondering about covered or uncovered turrits. i like the idea of covered but can you leave them uncovered when hunting and will this hurt the turrits if get wet? do they track as well as the other nxs scopes?

Re: help with nxs choice

This will sound like a silly question to ask back, but how far can YOU shoot at deer sized game (assuming the scope isn't the hang up).

And to kind of answer the first question, I would say easily 600 yards w/o focus and probably more.

Re: help with nxs choice

i feel comfortable shooting my 300 rum with a 5.5x22 out to 800 yards in good conditions. i was hoping that i would be able to shoot the compact nightforce 6 to 700 yards.

Does anyone have a picture of the covered turrits uncovered?

Re: help with nxs choice

thats what i was hoping know i just need to know about the covered turrits vs the uncovered? this will be on my 22-250AI shooting 75 amaxs for calling coyotes. might be on my 6.5x284 for deer season as well?

Re: help with nxs choice

I'm sure that your uncovered dials won't give an integrity issue.
Most quality brand optics are designed waterproof. The covers would be to prevent unwanted adjustments.

Re: help with nxs choice

Either way you go these optics will do what you want. People have been shooting 10x optics to 1k yds for years, so just because there are 22x and 50x optics will not make you hit ratio increase just because. If you are hunting with it, the 2.5-10x or the 3.5-15x will be optimal. Depending on the environment, range in the woods and all that goes into choosing the right caliber, spot and gear basically applies to the optics as well. I use a fixed 8x40 S&B on my .308 out to 500yds due to the turret design which is my limiting factor. If you practice with it, hunt with it, you will do just fine with it. Best wishes and happy holidays.

Re: help with nxs choice

I believe the uncovered knobs are limited to 20 MOA/ 5 mils of adj. cause of the way the Zero stop works.

I have 2 compact series scopes with covered knobs and while they have more adj. the clicks totally went away in 40 deg. weather.

Just some things to take in consideration.

Re: help with nxs choice

The only reason I do not use the covered turrets are something else to keep up with or remove when needed. I will track thru anything with the NF standard turrets exposed with a ZERO STOP. If I did not opt for that upgrade then I would have to agree with you on the covered for the simple peace of mind. As stated, tracking, its a NF, the compact or full size will not matter they are great optics and I am running them daily on many of my personal weapon. BTW, I had to be TALKED into my first 2.5-10x24, at that time Nathan Hunt, and since then, I have never doubted them or looked back. You will be very pleased with this little monster.
